problem with pull-offs on the high e

I been practising these a lot lately but on certain licks I find I pull the string to far down the neck on the high e especially high up on the neck. for example the end lick of the stairway to heaven solo. 

any tips to correct it?

Do you mean you're physically bending the high e off the finger board?

I've just looked how I play the end of the stairway solo and as my thumb is still hooked over the top of the fretboard following the bend my finger is pulling of at about a 45 degree angle to the the neck so I don't get any movement in the string.

I tried it with my thumb on the back of the neck to see what the effect would be and the first thing I noticed was how much poorer the tone was nevermind if the string moved.
