My son asked what was the modern equivalent and it’s got to be Mr Brightside.
I think it's Seven Nation Army.

The opening riff of "All Right Now" by Free was another one.

Even though SOTW was released in 1972 it wasn't until a couple of years later that budding guitarists adopted it as the riff de jour.

When I heard this on R2, my first thought for what do kids now start with was "Seven Nation Army". My nephew also learned "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and some Black Keys stuff when he was starting out.

Bach 'cello sonata #1 on an ES175, capo at the 18th fret. Impressed me then, impresses me now,
That's some capo that can do that.

Seven Nation Army is a good one to start with because like Smoke On The Water it emphasises rhythm and phrasing rather than dexterity.

  • When I was starting out all the budding guitarist/bass players around used to trade on:

The bass line to Start! by The Jam

The intro to Babylon's Burning by The Ruts

    The intro to Pretty Vacant

    The Paranoid opening riff

    Message in a Bottle riff

Doobie Bros riffs - - Long Train and Listen to the Music and also any Duane Eddy and Ventures and Dick Dale as those sounds sounded so epic even then...

I read an interview where they asked some american country players what the riff of choice was and they said it was wildwood flower by the carter clan.  I learned it just in case I need to try a guitar in a nashville guitar shop!
