OK so it was me, I had a few wines and got carried away. I need to crowd fund this, the auction house keep phoning me, I can't stall them forever.

https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2017/nov/15/leonardo-da-vinci-salvator-mundi-auction

and I thought Custom Shop Les Paul's were getting expensive!

the auction house takes $50M! They're worse than Ebay.

And it's not even definitely by Leonardo.

For some reason a song by Del Amitri occurs to me… how big a hospital would $450million buy?

One too big to fit in a safe until it's worth more than you paid for it...

something the size of a portakabin, but under PFI we'd still have to pay $450M for it

It's this bit that gets me.

While the auction house have found experts who are willing to declare it is a Leonardo, there are other experts who don't agree that it is.

    Sounds a lot like

"It's an original 59 Les Paul"
    "No it isn't"
    "Yes it is"
    "It might be"
    "True. It might be"
    "That'll be $500,000 then please.."

From what I was on TV it previously sold for £45 ?!!!?

Then it was discovered that some idiot had scrawled over the original painting and after getting it restored it was re-valued.

    Not a bad markup that!

No, iI'm certain it's by Leonardo DiCrapio, I have a handwritten letter:

"I, Leonardo DiCrapio, deffo painted this picture, and that's a fact mate.

    Yours Leo x"

    "Yes it is"

    "True. It might be"
    "That'll be $1,100,000 then please.."

No problem. Stall for a year, and then sell it on for 450m, pocketing the 50m profit. Problem solved!

"What Gouzer may have meant is that buyers prepared to spend in excess of $100m on artwork exist in the modern and contemporary fields. A Leonardo, even one as dulled as this, could prove an amusing conversation piece."

How boring must you be that you have to spend that sort of money on a 'conversation piece'?

With money saved by brexit we could buy someone a da Vinci every one and a half week.

I'm a complete ignoramus when it comes to art - I know I certainly don't admire it - I know I don't understand it - but if I had a spare 450 million I'd find something else to buy - That is a fact  - Then buy a load of black n white 'Athena style 'prints from the high street that I prefer to look at for the house - No value but I like them - Each to their own I guess

I came across a new acromym in one of the papers last week - UHNWI

UHNWI = Ultra High Net Worth Individual

Some interesting and mindboggling anecdotes about how these people live and think.  For example, one of these guys was in a nightclub, and was bumped from the top VIP roped off spot to a 2nd tier place.  Calls his concierge and has the place closed down apparently.  Sounded like he effectively bought it and closed it down in a huff.  Whether these stories are really true or not, there are a (very) few people about for whom by this da Vinci may be no more of a big deal than some of us buying a vintage guitar or the like.
