Wiring for LPs

Seems to me, although I am frequently wrong, that screened 3 core cable would be a good way to wire a LP, to protect against noise and keep the cabling a bit tidier?

Wire p'ups to vol pots as usual, and vols/tones connected as usual.

Then

1 core from vol A to selector switch
1 core from vol B to selector switch
1 core (left longer than the other 2) from switch to output jack
screen  (left longer) serves as earth from  output to switch, via the back of an earthed vol pot.

Or am I  wrong or overcomplicating things?

Now just got to find some screened 3 core cable that's not 10mm diameter!

Likely to be wimpy stereo cable with pvc covering rather than butch braid covering

Ok, that's the 2-core  screened variant, but there are more-core options.

(Farnell in case you were wondering).

4-core pickup wire, if you are struggling to find 3 core

Isn't that what Gibson uses on modern guitars (i.e. since the 60s)?

I sometimes use 4-conductor pickup wire, taking two cores to the Jack.

In my opinion the best way to do it is with 4-core pickup cable, and use the fourth core as the ground, with the shield only connected at the control cavity end. This usually makes it easier to wire to the switch since there's less risk of overheating the cable and melting it when soldering to the frame, and it's easier to fit in the cavity usually. (I always heatshrink the cut end of the outer sleeve to keep it all neat as well.)

I'm glad that my thinking wasn't spectacularly daft!

    Thanks all.

Where's the best place to buy 4 core pickup wire - given that a couple of metres is likely to serve my needs for just about forever?

In some LP variants, all four pot chassises are linked with a permanent ground.
