HELP: Valuation required on Alex Lifeson's own Gibson.

What's Hot

edited December 2017 in Guitar

A cricket mate of mine, Ed, runs charity auctions.

He's got this- literally one of Alex Lifeson's own ES-LesPauls- Custom Shop, one of 200 made, and Alex used it last yr and this.

It's signed by him and Geddy Lee, plus all of Pearl Jam and Yes, as it was used at the R and R Hall of Fame Awards.

So, I know the Custom Shop models were £4k new in UK...and the non CS are £2200.

Bearing in mind this was Lifeson's, what, at a Charity Auction, should the reserve be, realistically?

(I have told Ed, my mate, that I reckon you'd get more on Reverb, Ebay or TGP for it....thoughts?)

I personally think the Pearl Jam sigs devalue it to a Rush-head? Thoughts?

@guitars4you ??

  • I’m no expert on celebrity associated auctions etc but i’d probably say £8k ish if a Yes fan is present. If two wealthy Yes fans are present then the sky’s the limit!

    James,

Thanks matey, and hope all well; I told Ed to bung 5k as a nominal reserve- agree with your points.

I think the value depends on what sort of auction it is and who might be attending/in the audience?

It’s not a guitar that can be played to any extent so is going to appeal to collectors, fans of Rush or even Yes, Pearl Jam and Snoop and wealthy folk who fancy buying something different.
In this context I don’t think any of the signatures will devalue it particularly, Pearl Jam are fairly respected.

I think £5k is bang on as that covers the new price and any embarrassment to Alex Lifeson should there be no interested parties in the audience.

I once worked on a PRS which had been Paul's 40th birthday present to Alex Lifeson.

I think the whole memorabilia side of valuations is a different ball park and as such specialists auction houses are better placed - I've seen a few similar items go through Gardiner and Houlgate as well - So they are a better option

I suppose it will depend who is at the charity auction and what interest they have in such a guitar and related artists - it takes 2/3 interested bidders to take the price up - No interest and no sensible price achieved  To be honest I haven't got a clue and tend to stay away from such memorabilia - sorry can't help further

I wonder if all that graffiti will clean off ok, as it looks like a nice guitar under all the scribbles....
