Have so far gone at it with acetone and now onto paint stripper!..

gutted tbh, spent ages staining a really nice sunburst then managed to get two cans of really bad clear... first the clear bloomed like mad when it was applied, took ages to correct that...

    http://a63.tinypic.com/2cyjhj9.jpg

than after one rehearsal (yep one) big chunks of the clear started coming away... in the same way ice on a pond shatters!...

so so now it’s effectivly ruined it’s going back to oly White!

DIY stripper is neutered, maybe that was the problem. "Bodyshop" or "trade" paintstripper still has DCM ala dichlormethane in it. You can get it from paint shops and ebay. Can help if you Dexter it up in clingfilm, stops the DCM going away, it evaporates super fast. I've had bottles of pure DCM evaporate away to nothing just sat on the shelf.

The best thing to dissolve nitrocellulose is butanone, AKA methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) you can get it on eBay.

Cheers, It’s my old USA  strat... my first proper guitar bought new in 89... in the 90’s I stuck a Floyd rose on it, as the body had the swimming pool route the bridge eventually collapsed into the route!... this ash body is the third to be on the guitar... not long finished it and the nitro just shattered off in big chunks (like sheet ice)... really brittle and the fact it bloomed so much suggests to me a dodgy batch!...

Its going back back to olympic white, as it was when I bought it!...

You can't buy DCM anymore without registering with the HSE and taking training which generates a certificate.

Incidentally I've never stripped nitro with it. I always use a strong solvent called 80-67. It's defence industry standard, what the civvy equivalent is I'm not sure.

For trade that makes sense given the regs but you can still get it on Fleabay and chem suppliers. One other use is in a tank with a bit of water floated on top, strips powder coat, handy for car & motorbike bits.

1st couple of coats of primer on and flattened back!... shows just how uneven the body is and also shows I should’ve used grain filler!

The mint guard looks good to me, although some can look too minty in the flesh.

that looks like what I would expect from oly & mint

I had a parchment guard on my Olympic white parts aster and it just was too much, So I went for a brown tortoise shell instead and the contrast was much better.
