I nominate this- Sun Ain't Gonna Shine- Walker Brothers.

It has:
Intro
Verse
Hook
Middle 8
Key Change

All in 2 mins 40 seconds.

And it's great.

Beat that.

I dunno, I always tend to think that Abba pretty much produced the perfect pop song, and so many to chose from.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

  • Queen feat. David Bowie - Under Pressure

Incredibly catchy hook, great lyrics, great vocal performances from two absolute legends. Also has a great mood/dynamics change in the middle before building back up to a thrilling climax.

  • wis for @VimFuego's choice of Abba - which applied during the 1970s, but the same material (good though it is) won't go down so well today, so I think the criteria have to be context-dependent. I'd vote Beatles in the 1960s, Abba in the 1970s, and in the 1980s I think Duran Duran should at least be on the podium. I am not knowledgeable enough to talk about the 1990s or later (it all sounds shit to me)

This is at the very top of the tree, Badfinger, one of the saddest stories in modern music.

    Wichita Lineman

Stuart  Maconie called it "the greatest pop song ever composed"
    I cannot argue with that.

When Glen Campbell died, the (excellent) Radio 4 obituary asked one of his close friends to explain why Wichita Lineman was massive and exactly what it was that grabbed the public.
He answered: "The catch in his voice".
