Songs with a great riff but no solo

What's Hot
BroccoBrocco Frets: 88
I am on a mission to compile a set list comprised entirely of songs that have a great guitar riff but which do not have a solo, in the hope that this will give me enough confidence to finally pluck up the courage to try playing live in front of a real audience. Hoping that TFB brothers and sisters can help me!

    What a good question.

I just had a look at our old set lists and I'm struggling to find many songs that don't have some sort of guitar solo in them.

But we often started with "Knock on Wood" as a warm up song. It's easy to play, you can do it in various ways and of course everyone knows it.

Pretty much anything by the Smiths though trying to nail those riffs is harder than most solos...

"Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits is a good one if you can get the riff right.

If it helps, the first time I tried to do a solo break I don't think I hit one correct note...

Bowie Rebel Rebel - that classic incessant riff and a chorus. No solo. Genius song IMO.

I'm sure they satisfy the second requirement. Whether they also satisfy the first may be considered subjective.

  • Most songs by Nirvana, some may have a solo but they will only be very basic.

Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son

Does it have a "solo"? I am going to say no.

It is rifftastic and at almost exactly the middle point it has one that is a serious contender for greatest riff in Rock history.  :)

If you do this song, then no solo obviously but make sure you include the sound of the fuzz pedal being engaged at 34-36s.

    Frankie Miller, "Live In Vain":

*edit* although I see there is a bit f a brass/sax solo on the second run through the middle eight!  I thought he just sang the same words again - sorry!
