    Woooooo!

So much to discuss....  But I think the best part was luke on Crait (or not), and all the hints he wasn't there.... How'd he get in? Why is he looking younger? Why is he not making footprints? Why is he holding his old lightsaber?

I admit, I shed a tear when he became one with the force... That music, the twin suns.... Awesome.

However.... Please get rid of stuff like Mary Poppins Leia, and the stuff like the casino and Luke getting the milk was pointless. And as for Phasma.... What's the point of her? She's useless.

Quite mixed about it. I loved the way the trailer fooled us, Luke being reluctant and just wanting to go off and die was brilliant. Also the truth about Rey’s parents was great. The showdown with Snoke looked great, but him being killed so easily was a bit of a let down. The First Order became a bit of a joke, lots of over the top ‘baddie’ rants that stopped them being menacing.

Leia flying through space was ridiculous, I thought that would be the big emotional end to her character, but it totally turned it around into a WTF moment. It’ll be interesting to see what they do now with the character as she survived the film, I was expecting to be in tears with a brilliant on screen death.

The whole casino scene with Finn and that girl (can’t remember her name) was a waste and didn’t really add anything at all to the film.

The battle on the white/red planet at the end was great, looked fantastic and Luke’s part in it was brilliant.

The Yoda bit was actually good, I was surprise to see him appear, and they could have overdone it, but it worked well.

I’ll be seeing it again when I take eldest lad over Xmas, might change my mind on a few things on second viewing.

I did love the way we'd been duped into thinking the space penguin was going to be a major thing and then, nope, they're just a minor pain in Chewie's butt. Cute though.

I think they could have done the Finn/ Rose section better but it was pretty good as is.

Luke doing the shizz near the end and then fading away was brilliant, and the Yoda section was spot on.

I especially liked the way that they portrayed Kylo (Ben) Ren as a prick again. Adam Driver's a very cool dude, but he plays an ass very well.

    Will be seeing it again.

I absolutely loved it. Laughed out loud many times. The ironing board was a nice touch ( nod to Slave One) and Luke throwing the light sabre away after all that wait was genius. Rey had the best lines though. And it's good to see Mark Hamill still has a great ass.

  • I enjoyed it. Much credit from me for being courageous in moving the story on so far. I enjoyed the Finn/Rose story a lot. I think the casino planet part was to introduce the DJ "it's just business" character.  I enjoyed Ade's restrained appearance too. The bombers being destroyed with Rose's sister on board was well done (almost RO in it's casualty identification). The red planet stuff was great and gave it a grandstand finish.

The "Leia flying" part was a strange addition. The milking and fishing montage was complete bobbins. Hamill's limitations as an actor were sadly there to see with him having so much dialogue imo.

As I mentioned in the other thread there's a lot to take in and I'd like to see it again.

  • The bombers in space was an interesting concept....but then with the way the ships fly and the explosions normal physics doesn’t really apply to the SW universe does it.

The Leia space scene and milling scenes were completely ridiculous but I loved everything else.

How do bombers drop bombs.... In space? And why was gravity affecting the shots from the cruiser against the rebels...?

    And again, Phasma - why?

Have to say though, the hyperspace kamikaze was amazing. Stunningly put together!

  • Loved it. Pretty much agree with Col re the casino bit and flying Leia etc etc but overall I really enjoyed it and can't wait to see it again. I'd read that the plan was to have TFA be the "Han" movie, this one the "Luke" movie, and the next one the "Leia" movie. Obviously they can't do that now, so I was very surprised to see her reach the end of the film unscathed.

I thought Adam Driver was the highlight. Absolutely stole every scene for me. It probably helps that I haven't seen Girls, which is making a lot of people struggle to separate Ren from his character in that.

What I do find amusing is all the fanboys on Reddit wailing about unanswered questions as if the original trilogy was this perfect, unassailable thing with nothing left open (who is boba fett? is he dead? who is/was the emperor? why did the humans trust the ewoks when just the night before they were going to get cooked and eaten by them? etc etc)

  • A good comment on Kotaku sums it up for me:

What Rian Johnson was trying to do (I’m not sure I totally agree with his decisions) was take the usual harebrained Star Wars convoluted Hail Mary hero plan and make it fail. And fail spectacularly.

The Last Jedi was all about the heroes failing. There’s no more magic plot armor. Poe gets a lot of good people killed by his heroic plan in Act 1. Finn, Rose and Poe get a lot of good people killed by their heroic plan in Act 2. Luke gets a lot of good people killed 10 years ago by failing his failing pupil.

If you view the Last Jedi as a movie about failure and overcoming it and subverting Good Guy Hero movies, it’s fantastic. If you went into Last Jedi expecting to see Hero Luke at some point, the Luke we left at the end of Return of the Jedi, like I did, you left the movie really disappointed. AT BEST, Luke gets some peace and closure at the end. He and Leia are truly side characters in this.

  • Failure has always been there though within Star Wars. Kenobi failed to keep Anakin on the straight and narrow and failed to kill him when he had the chance, taking that guilt on into a ANH. Yoda and the Jedi failed to detect the Sith Lord right smack in the middle of it all. If you go with the prequels alone, they're pretty much a saga in themselves in the failure of the Jedi to actually do anything well, choosing to be an organisation that's pretty much stuck up its own arse with self-importance and nonsense like the Jedi Code.

I'd really prefer to ignore the prequels, please?

Rian subverting the genre by turning heroes into failures is interesting, especially since it has been that Damn Skywalker family all along causing all the problems in the galaxy.
Kylo Ren really came into his own in this film. Driver played him splendidly growing in scale to match the presence of Vader.

Anakin looks more like a kid who was groomed by two opposing factions for their own ends rather than a person set on his own journey to power.

  • My thoughts

The casino bit just to set up the force sensitive kid at the end was a massive waste of time that spoiled the tone/pace of the film imo.

Loved thr interaction between Rey and Kylo. Genuinely didn’t know which way they’d go. Great fight scene without Snoke’s guards. The whole “join me and we’ll rule together” felt a little tired though. Found it odd that Kylo then just let her fuck off back to her mates. Felt a bit clumsy that bit.

I really liked Luke’s rant about the Jedi and would’ve preferred to explore that and the force in general. He suggested there’s more to it than light and dark but it didn’t really go any deeper than that.

    Space Leia sucked sweaty balls.

    Snoke’s gold pyjamas?!

Crait (sp?) was cool, the red surface under the salt looking like spilled blood was nicely done.

Loved Luke tossing the lightsaber over his shoulder.

Poe’s recklessness getting people killed made me like his character more than the seemingly perfect “quarterback” pilot in TFA.

Is it wrong that I found Laura Dern really hot?

Definitely want to watch it again but I’d love an edit without the Canto Bight side story.

Leia Poppins was cringing, as was Luke's expression after the milking. The "yeah, that is nowhere" comment to Rey too.

I like the last two, but was unfortunately quite disappointed in this one.

    For about 20 minutes.

Then it picked up, and was pretty good. Excellent space fighting scenes, some good stories for characters like Finn, Poe, etc The story between Rey and Kolo was great, as was the way he almost turned to the good, but doubled-down as a bad guy again. And Yoda. And the Falcon. And crashing the cruiser at light-speed. The basic story was always going to be obvious, but there were still plenty of surprises in *how* we got there.

I heard about the humour, and was a little concerned that it would be over the top. For a few scenes, it felt like it, but after walking out of the longest Star Wars film done so far, I felt pretty damn satisfied.

    This deserves a wis.

The kamikaze at light speed was absolutely incredible cinema.
