the force awakens - childish remake of a new hope with silly lines and childish winks to the camera, new hope with a bigger death star.
rouge one - a true film in the same world as the originals
The last jedi - childish rip off of return of the jedi with a few empire strikes back references, with silly lines and winks to the camera.

I couldn't be more disappointed with the total lack of REAL story, utterly no character development, think about the originals 3 films over a big period of time for Luke to become a Jedi and and it was his personal journey as one of the main plots, Rey finds a light sabre, has an hour on an island and she's using the force like a pro.

The whole thing feels like a childish method of moving from one explosion to the other (which is what JJ did with star trek - no story, just spinning cameras and explosions).

Rouge one - a real story that served the universe of star wars, these.....good lord, so bad.

  • I saw it tonight.  Great entertainment but not a great movie, which is like all the Star Wars films (except for the prequels which were neither).  I think reviewing it like a film is like reviewing a pantomime like it’s theatre.  Star Wars is space fantacy / pantomime and reviewed againt that criteria this one was good, in fact almost worked on a level above (but let’s not get carried away).

So, in the middle of Christmas shopping yesterday I stopped in Smiths and had a flick through The Last Jedi: The Visual Dictionary, the little Christmas moneyspinner Disney have commissioned to accompany the film. Alongside lots of nice glossy pictures of various background characters there was a sidebar on the page about the Resistance bombers that clears up the ongoing "bombs don't drop without gravity" thing. Apparently it's a sequential electromagnetic launching mechanism that makes it look like they're all  dropping one after another, and they're guided to their targets by magnetic something or other.

    So that's that cleared up.
Was there a planet underneath the dreadnought? That was my first thought, although relying on that wouldn't be a great design in space. There is of course always gravity in space, it is just a question over how much.

There was, plus the artificial gravity on the bomber itself, which would have created some inertia for the bombs to begin to fall, then they would (presumably) accelerate towards the dreadnought and planets’ mass below.

One more thing to all the bomber-in-space haters: we accepted the idea perfectly well in TESB in the asteroid field.

Quick thought on Del Toro/DJ: I’m convinced he is/was the galaxy’s best slicer*, not the guy we see in the casino itself. This feels more like traditional star wars misdirection (i.e. from a certain point-of-view) to me.

*Hackers in SWEU have been called slicers for decades. That was one (more) change I don’t see the need for!

  • We are all making adult opinions on a film that's probably aimed at people younger than us. Our parents probably thought the same when they brought us to the originals.

  • Just back from seeing it.  Had real goose bump moment when the opening crawl started and the music kicked in.  I was hoping for more detail of "The Force" and Snoke, but Im not going to lose sleep over the fact that I didn't.  I enjoyed it.  It was an escape from real life for a few hours.  The battles were cool and Luke becoming one with the Force was a good way out.

It will be interesting to see what they do with Leia in the next one.

Yes, they've got to kill her off (again) but in a way that doesn't allow for another bit of Mary Poppins magic. And all with CGI or cutting-room-floor leftovers. D'oh!

  • Saw it today. It felt like a made for TV series mashed together to make a film. A lot reminded me of Battle Star Galatica.
Now that the whole Han/Leah/Luke are done with I'm hoping for a fresh story line for episode IX

I saw it yesterday. I saw a new hope when I was 15 and that's the problem. I reached the originals recently as an adult and the dialogue is poor, the story flimsy and the action is great. That also describes the last jedi.

I went with the Missus to see it yesterday. There were quite a few things that I loved about it, but ultimately, I think it's been over 'Disney... d' for my tastes. Too much humour, and WTF was the flying Leia thing about?! Obviously not aimed at a 40 something lifelong Star Wars fan... unfortunately :(

    Just seen it today.

Most of what I thought has been said already, but I can sum it up fairly briefly...

It isn't the best Star Wars film since the original trilogy.

    Rogue One is.

    The end.

    I watched it over Christmas.

I didn't fall asleep, I didn't get very bored and I only rolled my eyes and muttered "oh for fuck's sake" under my breath 4 or 5 times.

By Star Wars standards I think that must put it somewhere near the top of the tree.

My 5 and 9 year old liked the "shooty" bits. The 11 year old was more impressed with the CGI.
I enjoyed them not fighting for 152 minutes.
    10/10 would watch again.

I thought the big guns shooting green glows stuff in space with an arcing trajectory was a bit odd..

was there some unseen gravity well? lol

I went at the weekend with my family.  Just as Rey is introduced to Snoke my daughter decides that I need to take her to the toilet.  When we came back Snoke appeared to be in bits.

Will now wait for the dvd to see how it happened.  The anticipation is probably more fun than the film anyway.

Don't expect too much... the bit immediately after that scene is quite good though.

  • Saw it last week. As long as you don't do expecting a hard scifi movie and just realise it's  a kids cowboys and indians story in space, you're fine.

    Good bits:
Best lightsabre duel since Luke v Darth Vader and just topping Darth Maul.
Red/white mineral moon climax and Luke reappearance
    Suicide hyperspace jump

    Naff bits:
    Casino mission, 45 wasted minutes
Flying Leia, should have just killed her then. She's irrelevant to the rest of the story from that point onwards anyway

    Hmm bits:
Admiral  v  cocky pilot, just tell him what the f*cking plan is.

    Wasted opportunity:
    Captain Phasma

    Nice surprises:
    Chrystal cats, cool new creatures
Chewie v Porgs,  made me LOL
Two yound leads (Rey & Fin) continue to develop

Wouldn't watch it again, until   seeing the next one, to remind me what happened in the last story.

And Rogue 1 One is still the best movie in the whole series apart from Empire.

I thought it was abysmal.  I hoped to see Star Wars in its maturity but instead got a load of nonsensical drivel. Very little sense of continuity or sensible progression. Any meaningful aspects of the film where swamped by all the bad bits.  And there were more bad bits.  Couldn't care less about Rey; Luke sold out big time; Chewie should've just eaten the bloody Porg; humour was misplaced: Snoke wouldn't have died that easily: Phasma was a pointless loser. Don't get me started on Finn and Rose. Overall, a 40 year old saga trashed about as though Sid Philips from Toy Story got hold of it.  Useless.

To be honest, the more I've thought about it since I saw it, the less I like it. It's as if they were trying to go for something deep and meaningful by overcomplicating it in the hope you wouldn't notice how shallow it all was, or the massive plot holes. Although bringing Leia back from the dead (how ironic) was the worst bit, there was a lot of other crap too, some of which you mentioned.

At least Mark Hamill did redeem it to an extent - I still think he was genuinely good, far better and less 'Hollywood guest star' than Carrie Fisher, or Harrison Ford in the last one.
