Car servicing

What's Hot
FosterFoster Frets: 1100
Just ordered all the bits I need to service the van. Oil, filters (oil, fuel, air). Came to £31 delivered.

For shits n giggles I looked at the kwik fit website - around £150! Jesus wept, it's not like they're going to do anything different. You'll be lucky if they actually carry out the work they say they have.

Why would you pay someone 5 times as much as it would cost to do it yourself? I can understand if the car is under warranty but it's not exactly difficult to do is it?

I could service my car about as well as my mechanic could set up a cross border financing structure....

You could say that about most things, I doubt many of us hire a company to run a bath for us

    How much do they charge?
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

Kwikfit have got premises to buy, business rates to pay, ramps to buy and maintain ..... all that has to come out the labour charge. The shop I do electronic repairs for charges £120 for a Windows reload with data backup .... for the same reason

I'm like you though @Foster ;  I service the car and the van myself, It's cheaper and I'm pretty tight

£31 delivered?  What the hell are you changing the oil with?  Crisp n' Dry?
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.
Also chips are "Plant-based" no matter how you cook them.

Really ?  OK, "What's your new oil filter made of - old egg cartons?' Etc..   Seriously, where are you getting prices like that?

    Erm, yes, exactly.

I do some stuff myself that most people here get someone in for. I get someone in for some things that a lot of people here would do themselves. It's a balance between cost, time, and inclination for each.

Fer example, I suspect you don't do your own MOT test...

I do love a home mechanic they often pop in for free advise and ask to borrow tools. I have even been asked if one can use my workshop to do a head gasket over the weekend !!
Surprisingly I've often said a polite no. Now as an Mot tester I kinda feel that your 1/2 ton killing machine should only be worked on by someone qualified to do so just like your boiler ;)

Hardly a company, but my butler does know to ensure optimum temperature.  ;)

£31 is a total waste of money, car engines don't need servicing at all.

I haven't changed the oil in a car for decades, when did you ever hear of the engine wearing out before the rest of the car is knackered?

I think everyone should learn basic vehicle maintenance - Oil and filter change, spark plugs, air filter, pollen filter, wiper blades, bulbs, battery, discs and pads - I do all of mine and only take the car into a garage when it needs to go up on a ramp.

I pay someone to do the servicing on our car, but only because my days of lying on the ground in freezing weather are long gone. Our car can’t physically fit in the garage so there’s nowhere warm and dry to do the work. I also don’t have the electric doofah to reset the service light. I service my bike myself though because that does live in the garage.

I once had a Renault 4 I drove round France and England. The only maintenance I ever did was occasionally pump up the tyres.
