Wet/dry/wet advice

Hey folks,

i picked up up my second katana 50 the other day and I’m curious about integrating them into a wet/dry/wet setup. My thoughts are to run both the katanas in true Stereo with my strymons and other wet effects but then have a central dry valve amp (for home it’ll be my lil Marshall anniversary 1w) which can take dirt, etc.

what I’m looking for is other folks’ advice or experience with a switcher. I want the ability to switch the dry amp in and out independently of the stereo amps as well as mute the stereo amps and only run the mono dry amp. Also, I’d like ground lift and phase switching to take care of any annoying phase/hum issues. Does anyone know of a switcher that will work? Would a boss ls-2 at the start of the chain be an idea to split the original mono signal in two and then run a buffer with ground loop/phase on one stereo output at the end?

cheers

Check out bright onion pedals, they may be able to put something together that fits your need if it isn’t already caterered for by their aby/abc pedals.

  • What's your budget?

I ended up using a GigRig G2 to create setups like this. It gave me a lot of flexibility but it might be way overkill for what you'd like to do.

Even if you don't buy one their website/manual has some interesting stuff about how to do routing and buffering to get different types of set ups.

I did consider a G2 but its a bit out of budget for what im looking for.  Im going to go Helix later in the year which should give me all the routing options so just looking into a stopgap for now

  • Bright Onion could be the way to go then - just had a quick look at their website and they do switchers that include buffers/isolated outs, phase switches, etc.

They might be able to build you something affordable. Using one of the cheaper loop switchers from Palmer or GigRig or something might also work but by the time you'd bought that plus any phase switchable buffers that you needed it might start to add up.

When I did my own w/d/w set up I used a Suhr buffer between the switcher and the dry amp. Tried to get away with out it but got a lot of noise and hum....

I didn't hear any great advantage for w/d/w over stereo, so I've stuck with the latter.

I use a Bright Onion pedal and 5 cable method.
    I think, therefore.... I... ummmm........

Mine is a simple set up that you could do with one central amp - and two full range speakers on wither side.
It keeps the guitar - amp - speaker signal chain 'pure' so to speak

    1. Microphone in front of the speaker
    2. Runs to an modulation effects processor (TC G Natural which also has tap tempo)
    3. 100% wet stereo outputs of the processor run to R and L speakers on wither side
    4. The volume control on the R and L speaker adjusts the quantity of the effect.
