Lazy J40 brand new but no sound

What's Hot
lukedlblukedlb Frets: 488
A mate has just received his brand new lazy j40 with tremolo and reverb in Australia. Lights up but no sound. Says there’s a faint pop when he just plugs in the cable. He’s a drummer so not amp minded.
Lets assume he has turned it all on properly and turned up the voltage on everything. Any ideas? I will be home late tomorrow so will skype him and see what’s going on. In the meantime?
poor guy: waited a year and he can’t get it on.

Question....did it get shipped with the tube separately. i.e. has he put them back in?

Check the Reverb plugs are properly in. I had a similar experience after I shipped one to a buyer in France.

I would suggest the first email is to Jesse and ask him if he has any suggestions first, points of diagnosis.

I'm afraid that just because the heaters are on and the valves warming up doesn't mean all is well. It's really back to first principles, valves in their right locations, the reverb and trem modules all connected correctly (I have only worked on a 20, but space is quite tight and fiddly). HT fuse checked and re-seated. Speaker jack checked and re-seated. My money would be on the rectifier or HT to be honest, as the amp should produce mains hum even if there are issues with the pre-amp section.

This. The guy helped me re-wire a J20 over Skype. He's very generous with his time.

I shipped an amp to South Africa once, when it got there it had been shaken badly, possibly dropped, still worked but needed a full checkover... international couriers were not kind.

If he has been waiting a year for this amps spending $50 to have it checked over might be worthwhile

I hope he intends on using a double kick pedal on it

Or, in the case of drummers, a good tool uses the best workers. ;)

Looks like the rectifier is shot.

I did think it from your description, what feedback have you got from your friend to determine that was the case?

Actually, he got a positive email from Jesse with a check list suggesting the same advice the forum had given. With the time difference and GP work commitments, he’s sent him a video and waiting for feedback. At max volume a quiet guitar distortion comes out. Reverb unit has been disconnected on purpose so that’s not it.

The mystery continues; it wasn’t the rectifier.
Jesse from lazy j spent last night on skype talking my mate through taking a meter reading of every resistor and wire. Part 2 is tonight.
Other members were right; Jesse is great help. Fingers crossed for tonight.
