So then Solo performers - a Setup question for you

So, you're a solo performer, or doing a solo gig. You're playing electric and singing

Do you prefer:

Big amp or small amp? Or no amp at all?
If using an amp, do you use amp volume or mic up for PA?

Any preferences (and reasons for them!) would be received with interest

If you are already hauling a PA for volume, then small and cuddly for the on stage bit. Either a pedal based system or little combo (mic'd or DI).

Try to rehearse the full setup and record or video out front to get the audience perspective too.

Keep the guitar combo level down a bit and mic it up for spread of sound. I don't use monitors if I can help it but stand slightly in front of the PA to monitor the whole mix. If I do use a monitor I'll have the FOH mix coming back at me.

Treat the electric the same as you would an acoustic in this situation ie have it in the mix so much easior to control overall volume and balance if you want it to sound good and balanced.  Either small amp and mic or processor. Depending on how sophisticated you want to be then processor with patch changes done from midi backing track
