Mobile Phone Sim cards in NZ

I have a trip to South Island NZ upcoming and pondered about the best way not get too ripped off about roaming charges whilst there. Specifically I have a (locked to O²) android phone which (I think) these best way is to get a local sim and use the handset with a different number.......unless I'm being a numpty. Any issues?

Anyone weigh in on this?

Hello, just checked with my daughter, who lives there. She says you can buy sim cards in the airport!

All the major network providers have an option, e.g. https://www.vodafone.co.nz/travel-sim

    Also there's a thing called https://www.skinny.co.nz/pricing/holidaysim/ - they do a 14 day pack for $26 with 1.5Gb data, or 60 days for $46 with 3Gb.

    If you reckon on $2 = £1 you'll be in the ball-park.

HTH, but let me know if you need more, and I'll ask.

I’ve done this a couple of times in NZ and it’s definitely the most hassle-free and cheapest solution. They certainly do sims at auckland airport, am sure Christchurch would be the same.

When we were in India we had several local PAYG SIMs for visitors. They used them to talk to us and each other during the day, and swapped to their own SIMs for an hour to pick up messages and make calls home at the end of the day.

Besides being cheap for internal calls in meant that they didn’t have to take unnecessary calls during the day, or night. The “I didn’t think you’d mind me ringing” and the band booking enquiry which woke me up at 3:00am.
