Creepy Monsters

What's Hot
Radiohead are suing somebody for nicking the verse chord progression from their song, Creep. That's right, folks. The same chord progression that Radiohead plagiarised from The Hollies' The Air That I Breathe.

Chop a line, now.

Even Alanis Morrisette would recognise the irony of the situation.

I've listened to both songs back to back and Lana Del Rey's 'Get Free' is a lot closer to 'Creep' than 'Creep' is to 'The Air That I Breathe'.

Not only is the main chord progression identical, albeit in a different key, her vocal inflections are very reminiscent of 'Creep' in places.

I think they have a point and Lana will have to settle.

I read that it's more likely the publishing company sueing rather than Radiohead. Still rubbish though, sueing for a chord progression.

I'd read somewhere that she'd its a fair cop have 40% of the royalties and joint writting credit. They (or their lawyers) said nope we want 100% and full credit. Tossers.

Why would anyone plagiarise such a dull song?

If I was her I'd just admit that I actually plagiarised The Air That I Breathe, and give all the money to the Hollies.

If Radiohead argues that I plagiarised them as well, I'd argue that was an open admission that they plagiarised the Hollies too :)

Just listened to it, the opening verse just sounds like she added a new verse to Creep, even the style of her singing.

Oddly enough, just been listening to Oasis's 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' - a.k.a. T-Rex's 'Get it On'.

People pinch each others' stuff, occasionally get sued, world keeps spinning.  There are surely only so many mathematical combinations of twelve notes and their associated chords.

  • I had a good listen to compare (and also listened to the Hollies), and Lana Del Ray has not just taken the chord progression but also the vocal melody and rhythm pattern, to the extent where at one point I noticed her rushing the lyrics to get them to fit into the Creep vocal melody despite having too many syllables.

To be fair, good on them for taking the effort to shut her down as much as possible. I can't fucking stand her.

  • I'd imagine it's more about being seen to actively protect their copyrighted material (same reason as why only headstocks are properly covered with electric guitars and not body shapes) and since the Hollies are listed as co-writers on Creep because of the previous court case, then they would also get their share of the royalties if successful.

yeah I cant understand it Lana del rey is usually so upbeat and jolly.

Any publicity is good publicity.  How many people have listened to lana del ray "just to see", and then maybe checked out the whole album. So I guess its mission accomplished.

Yup it's close. Yup radiohead and the hollies should get credit. Pushing for 100% seems like they are being a bit of an arsehole.
