Had to have my cat put down last month. She was 14 blind and deaf and not eating, this all happened within a month, you know your cats and what’s best. Me I knew there was no point in tests and meds etc, the vet agreed it was the kindest thing. When we moved in 12 yrs ago we had 4 cats. Down to 1 now. I buried them all in the garden, it’s good for the kids to see, can help them understand a little bit about death. Best wishes for your little one mate.

We had Boris put to sleep in October 2016.  Like yours, he was not just a cat.  He had a growth in his skull and there was nothing that could be done and we both miss him every day.  They break your heart.

Mind you, his twin sister has never been happier......

Just back from the vets - and so is Simba :) He's a bit worse for wear (having had valium and ketamine) and doesn't look happy....

The blood tests came back fairly normal, although they did show a slight clotting issue potentially, which would explain the constant nosebleed. However, blood count wasn't very low, so the vet isn't overly concerned at this stage.

X-rays of the skull seemed OK from what the vet could see, and he got a second opinion; however, he'd like a specialist to take a look, which I've agreed to, so should hear from that within a couple of days.

Biopsy results on the shoulder lump should be back in 48 hours.

Phew! Not out of the woods, but not as bad as I'd feared for now. So far he's cost me around £1.8k I think. Just hope the insurance will pay out....

  • Here's hoping the biopsy results are positive and the specialist works some magic.

I had to have one of mine PTS last year. It was the best thing for her as she was very poorly but damn that was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, was in absolute bits at the vets.

Simba is a right handsome fellah, hope he's OK soon.

    Cheers everyone :)

He's only purring when kneading my dressing gown, which is a bit concerning, but have given him some painkillers. He's been wolfing his food down though!

His nose is really congested as well which is a bit worrying but hopefully it's just the nosebleed stopping (it does actually seem to be slowing down).

LOL that cooking photo!  Only a cat could do that and be perfectly comfortable.

Hope your cat recovers ok. As others have said, pets do get under your skin and become a massive part of your life. We had to have our Labrador Mac put to sleep a couple of months back and we still miss him every day. Good luck Simba and get well soon.

Just had the what must be 8th vet trip - the x-rays have been assessed by specialist, and the good news is they can't see anything in the skull. However, they have found a small nodule in one of his lungs.

The little dude was sleeping in with me and the Mrs last night, and everytime he made a noise I'd jump awake, so even more exhausted today. Needless to say, I kind of broke down in front of the vet which was pretty embarrassing...!

He's had a massive dose of steroids to see if that can jump start him, but we're looking at palliative care. He's wolfed down a load of food, but doesn't seem to want to eat the cat soups for now, so trying to get some chicken or fish stock to give him liquids.

He sure seems a bit perkier after the steroids though...!

    ^This ^

    All the best

EDIT: try him with tinned fish eg Tuna in spring water. he might not like "in sunflower oil", "with chilli", or "in tomato sauce", and "in brine" might put more salt into him than is good. My Roobi also likes tinned salmon.

Took him back for a check-up just now, and we got the biopsy results; and it's really bad news.

Not only is the lump in his lung probably cancer, but the lump on his front left shoulder is cancerous as well, and there is one on his back left leg (where he's lame), and it's incredibly aggressive. The vet was superb though, took me through the full report, and has given me strong painkillers for the little dude.

However, she thinks it's literally a matter of days now :(

What's even more gutting is that he seemed to be getting a lot perkier in himself, and back to the cat he's always been (in fact, he's still acting like that). Needless to say, next trip to the vets will be 'that' visit, and I am utterly dreading it.

Asked about cremation services and they've sent me the details, so that's one less thing to have to worry about.

The cancer is so specific and rare in this combination, that the vet school who processed the scans etc. have requested my permission to use his file for courses and lectures - So I guess that through his illness he might be able to help other pets and their owners, which is a silver lining.

    Absolutely gutted :(

Take strength from the fact that you've cared for him so well throughout his life. He couldn't have wished for better.

Really sorry to hear this. 14 isn't a bad age and it sounds like he's had a great life though.
