Would you welcome a lesson from your guitar idol??

  • Definitely! Would love to sit down with Buddy Guy, learn a few things from the master of blues himself.

I'd have given anything to meet Stevie Ray Vaughan though.

  • A lesson on his vibrato from Gary Moore would be incredible. No one makes a guitar sing like he could.

Younger me would want Lifeson or Gilmour, or maybe Lukather or Rabin.

Today me would want Alan Sparhawk... and possibly still Rabin as there are a few absolutely murderous passages in his 80s Yes stuff that I cannot cop.

I don't listen to a lot of guitar music but I would enjoy a lesson or two from Neville Marten or Joe Walsh.  I attended classes at the IGF given by Neville and he is a very decent blues player.

Despite it not sounding 'difficult' i never got close to getting to grips with the outro of Take it Easy on the Hell Freezes Over album.  Joe would certainly be able to give me a few pointers there......

Good shout. Have you read his autobiography. He comes across as a really nice easy-going guy.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

    I don't know.

It's one thing to be crap in front of your friends, it's another thing entirely to be crap in front of somneone who can forensically analyse every element of your crapness.

On the other hand, I could get them to autograph a whole load of stuff and flog it.

Yeah. I think I'd go for Richard Thompson.
I'd also go for Richard Thompson. Incredible player and very good song writer too.
One day I'm going to make a guitar out of butter to experience just how well it actually plays.

If they had to wear full stage costume then it would have to be Ace Frehley.

I'm not sure an hours lesson would be long enough for Springsteen to do an intro and a song.

Hmmm I'd probably go with Marc Ribot at the moment.
In the early 80's I played bass on a recording session with Marc at Right Track Studios in NYC.  I was also over at his apartment to go over the arrangements.  All the other players commented how good he was.  I remember that he had just got a boss CE-2 and wanted to use it.  We recorded 2 songs I think and spent the whole afternoon there.
Wow I don't know much of what he did before Lounge Lizards and the Tom Waits stuff.
What was the session you worked on?

  • Well, Nuno would just sit there awkwardly and tell me to learn by ear and develop my own style!

Guthrie Govan on the other hand, I bet he could tell me a few stupid mistakes I am making and skills that I have allowed to become rusty.

As my guitar idol is dead I'd like an hour with Eric Clapton.

Most of my guitar idols are dead, but I would love to meet Billy Gibbons.

  • Don’t really have a guitar idol as such. And tbh the majority of “famous” guitarists I’ve met have been real dicks!!!!

Actually, I'd rather have a lesson from Tim Pierce than any of my favourite artists

Judging purely by his teaching another vote for robben Ford. Not only is he phenomenal, his teaching is first rate.
