How do stop yourself buying guitars/basses/amps.....

I went into a serious loop of researching, ordering, waiting, enjoying, then doing the whole process again. I did this with high end basses for years.

I then wanted to get into guitar and did the same thing. I added two to my collection last year, purely because the prices of both for USA guitars was excellent.

I still want more, but I've decided the only way to stop this is to look at what you have and realise you might not get better unless you spend serious money. Like sell a few and spend £2-3 k. I just don't need to and don't want to.

I also look at the prices over the past 1.5-2 years and just think they are getting silly.

It's also a case of what room you have, and whether it's just investing for the sake of it any barely using it considering how busy life can be.

What do you do to try stop yourself just getting more?

Pedals are a different thing. Smaller and usually a lot cheaper.

I try and play and enjoy what I've got.

Forums, YouTube, magazines all feed the GAS. Cut down and use that time to play with others.

I haven't managed to find a lasting answer to this problem in 30 years of playing!
    I think, therefore.... I... ummmm........

Guitar companies do 95% of the job, by releasing nothing i'm interested in (ie nonsense design/spec, rubbish pickups, details I deem surplus to requirements, or too bling, boring colours, gloss everywhere etc etc).

The remaining 5% is me saying, I don't need it.

I look at my playing ability. I'm sub-Squier Bullet Strat on guitar and about Mexican Fender Precision on bass, both s/h.

Any time I catch myself looking at expensive equipment I just remind myself of my abilities.

I just ask myself "Will this really make me happier?"

I know this is the internet, and some of us are slightly over obsessive types, but music's just an entertainment. Some people in the world don't even get clean water to drink; many of our first world problems are pretty simple to resolve really.

Hone your preferences to such a degree that you either already have everything you want, or that anything else you want is really scarce.

I have slowed down.  I actually have 4 less guitars than I had a few years ago.  I do want a Tele though.

I look at my guitars and look at the one that's caught my eye, and realise that it doesn't do anything better than the one I've got.

If I can't find a niche for it, I don't buy it, regardless of how cheap or tempting it may be.

  • I haven't bought a new guitar in 5 years.

I have 5 electrics and 4 of them get played regularly, I would like another strat and a humbucker type guitar though.

  • Have a purpose for them, rather than just collecting.

It doesn't actually help you buy less, but at least it's a bit more justifiable!

sometimes if I put my guitar in the case and put it out of sight for a bit it feels like a new one when I open it.

currently my telecaster is being played the most after I some how managed to successfully set it up without completely making it worse like I usually do.

I'm short of space so every now and then I shuffle things around.

At the weekend I moved a couple amps and found a pedalboard with fx that I'd forgotten about. Happily playing with that now. Yes I used to have it bad.

This year I might buy a new guitar, but only if the price is right. They seem much more expensive this year compared to last year. I suppose the manufacturers and shops are selling less and going for bigger markup.
