Peavey Vypyr

Anyone got one or tried one?

I dont have space for two amps and can't play at volume due to having a baby in the house.

These seem like a reasonable compromise?

Have a read of my "home practice gear" discussion over in the amps section....then go out and buy a Yamaha THR, they're bloody brilliant (I only got mine on Saturday so I'm very much in the honeymoon period with it). Here's the discussion: http://thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/350/home-practice-gear/p1

Good shout, looks to be just the ticket. Only problem is it nearly doubles the budget. I can wait a few weeks though and save up. Cheers

I opted for the VIP2 over the 1 purely as there was more stuff on it to play with. I thought it could be useful for recording. I went with the VIP having gone in for a THR. The Peavey won hands down for me. Much more realistic sounds, loads more on it and if needs be I could get away with it at a gig. That said, I know the THR is really popular. Depends on what you want. If it's mainly Elec/ Acous the VIP does a great impression of an acoustic amp and very very good impression of a bass amp. I guess what you miss out on is the compactness and the better audio playback.

I will use the new amp mainly for electric and occasional bass. The Yam looks more living room/mrs friendly, the Peavey is cheaper. Hmmm

I had a vyper, I bought one for a similar reason to you.

Its ok as a toy but I got tired of it quite quick and moved it on. Not bad for the money but it just lacked.

Not to mention my other amp 100w Fender Twin was fine at quiet volumes and the vyper was made redundant.

On a side note with babies. Get them used to loud noise, they will sleep through it.

You will be making a rod for your back if the nipper is used to eerie quietness when it comes to sleeping.
One stray fart on the way to the bathroom and you have had it

My little lad will sleep through drilling, the hoover and all sorts :-) it was the best advice I was given

The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

I tried one of the smallest Vypyrs recently and I was quite impressed. Like all the modellers it seemed best at clean and high-gain, the in-between sounds weren't very convincing, but the oversize cabinet in relation to the tiny speaker seemed to give it a bit more 'air' and depth. Not great, but I'd probably be willing to play through one if I had to.

I have had two Vypers, both the 30 watt version.

    I can't praise them enough.

On both occasions I also had the Sanpera II footpedal.

Immense versatility in available tones and huge tweakability.

A 12" speaker meant I could practice it at band rehearsals too.

I sold only to move to a full on 50 watt valve amp for gigging.

As a home / rehearsal / quiet headphone amp (with mp3 aux in ability) it is fantastic

  • I had a Vypyr a few years ago. Thought it sounded great. I only sold it because I was in the middle of a GAS binge and wanted to try something else.

Absolutely!  My friend's lil nipper quickly got used to noise, and to sleeping in her own room, at an early age.   She'd be zonked out- with the window open- and Daddy and I would be out in the driveway shooting fireworks!  Didn't bother her a bit.  She sat in her car seat more than once, laughing and clapping like a madwoman- till she fell asleep in the middle of the show!  Daddy was into motorcycles, too.

If, on the other hand, you let JR train YOU and the mrs to come running every time they cry, they'll make life miserable.

I agree with meltedbuzzbox on noise and nippers. The best advice we were given pre-arrival of our first was don't creep round. Mind you there is the danger that he might turn into a 21 yr old death metal vocalist. Chris it's just surfaced!!
    Don't touch that dial.
