A Lacklustre 2018? Please Recommend Me Some Music...

What's Hot
AlexCAlexC Frets: 2396
This time of year I usually check out the new releases for the coming months. I’m a big music buyer and always on the look out for new (or new to me) music. Aside from a new Hart/Bonammassa (yes, I do like them), possibly the very last Manics album and probably a new Anna Calvi 2018 is looking a little sparse to me. So, recommendations for albums, please. I’m old school so like to buy a disc, but will download if that’s the only medium available. I enjoy a variety of music - doesn’t have to be guitar based. Only thing I’m not crazy about is most modern metal (Maiden and Priest for me) and country... although I love Americana. Go figure!
What do you recommend? Don’t mind if it’s some obscure jump blues from the 40s or an electronic duo from next week.

Hard to gauge your taste from what bands yiu have listed but here are some recent finds I've liked.

Hiss Golden Messenger - lateness of dancers
    - heart like a levee.
More vintage & street than Ryan Adams, great songs.

    ADHD - 2 - 3&4 - 6
Great Nordic Jazz band with Nels Cline style guitar thrown in.

Jessie Ware - tough love (Sade for this century)

The Cinematic Orchestra - Every day (acid jazz by a jazz band)

Justin Townes Earle - Kids in the street (rootsy)

Charlie Winston - Curio City (great modern adult pop)

I think the only 21st century artist I’ve been listening to lately is JD McPherson although it’s not particularly modern. It is guitar based music but not in a widdly widdly way - rock’n’roll, blues, indie. I like the cleanness of it - simple but well done production.

That'd be awesome - I've been playing them a lot recently

Also from this year so far, Jeff Rosenstock, Shopping and Shame have all released excellent albums

Good call - he's a bit of an antidote to a lot of what's going on today, a great guitarist who's not afraid to leave a bit of space.

I know this is a recommendations rather than looking ahead to 2018 thread, and I'm basically talking to myself, but Earthless have a new album out in a couple of months.

  • John Mayall - Jazz/Blues Fusion and Moving On

Both are really good and nothing like the Bluesbreakers before or since. The title of the first gives away the style of both. I've had the vinyl of Moving On since the late 1970s and during the last year discovered the existence of Fusion on CD. I now have both on CD for listening in the car.
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
Seriously: If you value it, take/fetch it yourself

Love them! even my kids love them, Delete The Kisses, Giant Peach, Bros just excellent!
I bought a ticket for myself to see them in Kingston via banquet records but then realised I'd accidently purchased for an under 18's set... I didn't go I think I would have felt a little awkward.
