Whatever it is you probably don't want his browsing history associated with your account. Certainly not in a court of law.

Like @Grumpyrocker said, Video games are colossal downloads and if he has PS Plus/Games for Gold, he'll get three free video games each month.  Even with the game installed they incur massive day one patches etc.

    Torrents.

that's it I'm guessing. I'm not being funny but I don't like the idea of someone using it for illegal activity when the account is in my name. So he's going to have to get his own broadband.
Especially when laws suggest you're responsible to some extent for the policing of your home network...

However... my mother and I managed 600 GB a month mostly on Netflix alone... well, Netflix, Amazon, Youtube and my internet consumption as a computer science student who games...

Oh, and there are computer games to figure in - if he plays computer games they can sit in the 50GB to 100GB range... replace a dead hard drive with a steam library on it and you might hit 200GB in a day several days in a row.

If you're worried, sniff the crap out of his packets and find out what he's doing with his interwebbing. Put some sharks in dem wires innit

If I was your lodger and I read this thread, I would move out on principle  =)
If we are not ashamed to think it, we should not be ashamed to say it.

Jesus H.  What on earth are you all doing?!!

Those are ludicrously high levels of data.

Kin ell! I thought our 70Gb per month was fairly high usage!
We switched from BT infinity to Plusnet unlimited 80Mb fibre and saved a fair bit.

  • Fucking hell!  No wonder the internet was slow :)

A few years ago we had BT with a 5GB monthly limit.  We got a smart TV and Now TV box, and thought we were badass because us and the neighbours would connect to each others BT wi-fi to watch films without touching our allowance.

If you really want to know, install an appropriate firewall and configure the logging so you can work out who's doing what (e.g. pfSense or similar for a homebrew to avoid too much expenditure).  Or use OpenMesh (or equivalent) for the wifi and kill the router wifi, then you can set up separate SSIDs for family and lodger, and also log/analyse traffic etc. etc.

When you actually look at where the traffic is coming from and what it is, it's often very surprising, and not what you expect. Unless you have teenage boys in the house, in which case it's exactly what you expect.

  • Me and the neighbours had a 5GB limit but wanted to test one of BT's selling points, that BT customers had unlimited wi-fi access via hotspots.  As I understood it, part of our routers were reserved as a BT hotspot so me and the neighbours purposely connected to each others (IIRC) BT Openzone.
