Mic Preamp Recommendation

What's Hot
I am looking for a Mic Pre and I wondered if Behringer stuff was any good now.
I have been looking at the 2200 Ultragain.

Any suggestions considered up to say £100 - £150

  • What do you want to use it for? Are you mic-ing a cab or a singer?

    Miking a guitar amp.

  • It's a non-answer, but check out this interesting video from SpectreSoundStudios. It's a "Metal Recording Trick" but I'm sure it applies to all kinds of situations.

The TL;DR would be that the pre-amp is really not that important, but if you can afford to record with 2 mics at the same time and mix it before going into your DAW, you have a pretty awesome setup with a lot of tonal freedom. The guy is also pretty happy with Behringer Preamps if I remember correctly.

That's great thanks.I watched the video and I will try some of the suggestions.
    Using 2 mics sounds interesting.

From what I recall of that video they advise using cheap preamps for metal guitars as it improves the heaviness and rawness of the sound, and that approach wouldn't work as well if you're recording a cleaner tone

Does your soundcard not have mic inputs? I suspect at the lower budget end of the market most mic pre's will be much of a muchness.

Yes my interface does have preamps but I want to use a mic pre so I can
reduce the input volume of the pre amp and get a cleaner signal.

At the moment their is too much noise because the input is high.

And no I can't turn the amp up anymore it's just right where it is.

Ok narrowed it down to 2.
    Presonus or Behringer.

    comments please.

You're wasting your money, buying one of those preamps will not give you a less noisy signal. Unless you are using a ten year old soundcard then a budget stand-alone preamp won't make any difference at all. Internally they probably use the same preamp-on-a-chip circuits.

Also, most preamps actually give their best noise performance with the gain turned up quite high.

What is it that you're recording, and how are you recording it?

It's fine now it was user error on my part.
I now realise a preamp is not going to do any good I just needed to
balance the interface volume with the amp.
