Some acts take a while to truly get going. Mind you, if they haven’t nailed it by the infamous make or break third album then they probably never will. Some artists seem to arrive fully formed - their debut containing all the musical ingredients that makes you like them and go ‘this is great. I want more!’
Obviously this is a personal choice, off the top of my head -
Roxy Music - Roxy Music (1972) The Roxy sound is here. Great songs. Doesn’t sound like anyone else that’s gone before. Brian ENO makes strange noises. I discovered it 25 yrs after the event and it still blew me away.
Never Mind The Bollocks Here’s The Sex Pistols (1977) Their only album. Brilliant from start to finish.
The Pretenders - The Pretenders (1980) What a band. Pop rock at its best. Don’t think they ever bettered it.
Oasis - Definitely Maybe (1994) It was a revelation at the time. Laddish, shouty, British pop and roll. It was all downhill after this as far as I’m concerned.
Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi (2010) Like Siouxsie singing Scott Walker songs while playing Ennio Morricone guitar. An amazing debut.
Over to you guys. Any love for Pablo Honey? One Step Beyond? Take That And Party?
