ABC - The Lexicon Of Love

Like Spandau Ballet, an absolute classic for their first album, but then changed style and lost most of their original fans... and unlike Spandau Ballet they didn’t then gain many new ones. I honestly can’t remember anything they did after the first album, other than not liking it.

An incredible calling card. The songwriting on that album is so mature and polished. I caught them on their tour in support of that album and they were at sea on a big stage. Fry had zero audience skills - telling all the screaming teens to get on their feet and then playing a ballad etc.. I figured the lp must have been a fortunate collision of Fry's (?) lyrics, Dudley's orchestrations and Trevor Horn's production skills. Nothing after came close.

I'm waiting for this to move to second albums so I can say Iron Maiden and Rainbow.

Under first albums can I throw in Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell, the first with Dio? Light and day from the Ozzy ploderama to my ears, a different band.

Agree on The Specials, Black Sabbath, The Pretenders ( they should have stopped after that really) and throw in:

    The Police with Outlandos d’Amour

Gillan with Mr Universe ( although not his debut recording obviously! Colin Towns on keys who you will see in the end credits of a lot of TV )

     The Strypes with Snapshot

    Carole King with Tapestry

    Probably think of some others.

I saw Gillan on that tour (Retford Porterhouse) - went expecting the jazz-funk IGB and got metal with John McCoy frothing at the mouth and Bernie Torme on guitar.

Led Zep I and Sabbath I, of course.

Heart's Dreamboat Annie (Magazine doesn't count!) - one of those ones where I saw them on the OGWT and bought the album next day. Same with Rush.

On the more obscure bands, 1994: were great; they were supposed to make it big, but never did.

Probably the biggest 1st album was Van Halen - they gave rock a kick up the backside, just when it needed it!

  • Loads already mentioned

    Van Halen 1
    Led Zepp 1

both set the template for the following decade of rock music, quite a feat.

    Portishead - Dummy

defined a genre and never equalled.

    Tori Amos - little earthquakes

Paved the way for many other great 90's female singer songwriters and some less than greats (Alanis Morrisette)

    Dire Straits

Perfect album, refreshing guitar playing and an awesome drummer.
