Badass jazz and blues guitarists! Who are you digging?

What's Hot

Looking for some new inspiration. Thought it would be cool to get a discussion going as I love checking out new guitar players.

I'm a big fan of jazzers like Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Kenny Burrell & John Scofield, bluesy guys like Robben Ford, Kirk Fletcher, Matt Schofield, Josh Smith & JD Simo and some of the more modern players like Oz Noy.

Who's everyone digging at the moment?

My reclusive Blues manic friend is very keen on the playing of the late Michael "Iron Man" Burks. He also recommends checking out Christone "Kingfish" Ingram.

Of course! Always been way more of a Robben guy myself though. Larry is really tasteful but his playing doesn't really move me the way Robben's does.

Watched Josh smith with Ariel Posen the other week at the jam house in Birmingham. They were both fantastic. Josh plays jazz and blues effortlessly. Plus he had a live tone to die for.

Yeah I was at the Swindon show. I've been wanting to see Josh live for a long time and his tone and playing was killer. So powerful and seemingly endless ideas when improvising. Really should've worn my earplugs but it just sounded too good!

@Fretwired All incredible players but I'm not so into the fusion stuff (Oz Noy being a bit of an exception). I like the bluesier side of jazz. Each to their own though of course and as I said, they're all immensely good guitarists!

@interstellar for sure. Landau is amazing! Impeccable tone and feel. The Michael Landau Group live album is so good.

@digitalkettle Lage is unbelievably gifted isn't he! Love his acoustic stuff especially.

@designerseye88 yeah he's great, and so young. Good vocals too. He's clearly learned a lot from Eric Gales. This version of Tin Pan Alley is cool

    Love Julian Lage.

He's also a really wonderful interviewee. He seems to have an endless pile of inspiration and enthusiasm about what he does, and a refreshing lack of ego for someone with such an array of abilities.

Another favourite is Mark Lettieri, who can bring the funk, but on a more bluesy vibe here with the Bob Reynolds Guitar Band -- solo from about 5min 40. His tone here is so good, too:
