I'm going to dump this. Used to be my work horse Mac but just don't use it now. I'd rather it go to somebody who could utilise it somehow than throw it but I realise it's old so probably slow compared to todays standards etc.

FREE to anyone who wants it

Slap some more memory in that and it'll fly, that would run Logic and a ridiculous amount of plugins without even breaking into a sweat

I've been tempted to do that but I don't use logic. However, maybe I should help it and use it somehow. I just can't bring myself to throw it as I know it's still useful to the right person. Maybe I've jumped to conclusions :(

Guys sorry I think I may have been a bit hasty here. I'm gonna have to do my research on this. Failing that, maybe I should put it on eBay. Sorry to appear flakey but maybe best to withdraw it for the time being :(

To be fair bud, I did think it was a bit insane (in a nice way)  to offer it up for free.

Yeah you're right @Strangefan ;. I was only advised by an apple shop that it'll be basically out of date and worthless but of course they are only interested in selling me another one ;) I use my laptop now as that's powerful enough for my needs nowadays but that doesn't mean its finished it's life just yet. My other grey and white one IS going to the dump though as it that is ancient and been using it as a doorstop for the past 3 years lol

SSD = Solid State Storage Device, I have one on my Mac 3.1 which i use as my backup machine and it makes the whole machine snappier, boot up times etc . You can use it on the standard SATA socket or there is a P{Ci card that actually runs a little faster . Memory is best bought on eBay, just make sure its for a 3.1 Mac

Ok cool. Not sure how that would make it snappier etc but hey certainly an avenue I'll check out so thanks for that :)

I run one of these machines that I got from Hayden. They're belting things but there are a couple of big downsides to it. The main one is that this particular model runs buffered ECC server RAM which is insanely expensive. The machines after it don't and it's why these machines tend to be worth less. The other thing is that the latest OS it can run is El Capitan.

The 2GB of RAM is what's crippling it. You're getting away with it because you're running Snow Leopard. But go to a later OS and it'll really struggle. Mine's got a tasty graphics card, 12GB RAM and runs from SSD (you'll need an adapter to make it fit and it's SATA 2 so won't be as fast as on a later machine) and it still chonks along very nicely. Its whether it's worth expense of doing that to an old machine, or just getting a newer, faster one. This is a 10 year old machine after all.

If you've got any questions PM me, I'm happy to answer them.

Ok thanks @juansolo that's great info. Not keen on spending more on an old machine so may decide to sell it if my son who goes to uni this year wants it or not
