I really hate sunburst

What's Hot
I hate sunburst. Three-tone is the worst, but they're all hideous. They make a guitar look like a piece of old granny furniture. Sunburst even makes a Strat look boring, and that thing is like a 1950s American muscle-car.

However, I realize not everyone agrees. What is it that sunburst-lovers see in it? Why do you like such an ugly, conservative finish? Sorry. I can't stop myself.

Oh man. The only thing worse than a sunburst is a black guitar with a corned-beef pickguard.

There are some terrible sunbursts out there with horrible banding and virtually no gradation of colour

My favourite finish. No accounting for taste and all that.

I do like a sunburst usually. However, there is one kind that I can't stand, and it's silverburst.

I would rather shit a hedgehog than buy any guitar in that finish.

There are bad bursts and there are great bursts. Thankfully, if you hate em all, other colours tend to be available.

Knaggs does my favourite - “Hickoryburst” - https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c7/a7/12/c7a712137b499d57ca70e703c869cbdf.jpg

Collings also shoots a killer burst.

Gibsons are arguably the worst. Bourbon burst is tolerable and I like the “vintage burst” Memphis does (did?) - but so many of the other bursts are either loud or boring...

Thank f**k I'm not alone in my dislike for sunbursts!

To me they're on they're on the same dislike list as gold knobs/hardware.

  • I get what you're saying.

When I was a kid... sunburst was the most common finish - so it got boring.

Today... there are other finishes I'd much prefer. However, there are some guitars that look 'right' with a sunburst finish... eg a Gibson L5 or a Gibson LP Std.  However, when it comes to Strats... sunburst is low on the list for me.

I’m willing to admit that a 335-type guitar suits a sunburst.

Sunburst screams fifties to me. Not quite my era.

I used to hate sunburst stratocasters in my teens, but now I like a two tone 50s.

I love southern rock so I think cherry plain tops, quilted lemon drops and cream plastics are the best.

    Anything red is great too...

The best finish in my opinion. Gives guitars character.

I think a 2 tone burst on a well worn 55 strat looks beautiful, .... but then there is the 'Clownburst' les pauls

I share a similar appreciation for sunburst but 3 of my guitars are sunburst just because they play and sound so good.
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

I never heard a bad comment about my Yamaha SG2000, but I saw 'Clownburst & Bling' mentioned on many Guitar Forums. I still think it's one of the best looking...
