Pedal help...

in a fit of impatience I tried the cap switch mod on the voodoo octave, made a huge (huge) mess/pigs ear. Pedal still turns on but doesn’t work - here are pics.

Any ideas..? I know it’s a state before anyone chastises me :pensive:

there’s a chance I could have fried the caps I suspect..

  • I think it's more likely to be a dry joint.. Do you have a multimeter you can test the cap with?

Not where I am now... long story but sort of need to get it done today and without one. Would new solder on the joins do it? Maybe?

I have spare .22 caps for strata but presume they wouldn’t be of use..?

  • You could try touching up the joint with a bit more solder. Do you have any flux? That will help. Do you have details of the mod you were attempting?

Got regular solder, nothing else. Mod was lifting two caps out, spinning them 180 degrees and plugging them back in.

The caps I spun are where the soldering is poor

Do the caps need to be totally flush on the other side or could that be an issue?

  • No they don't, but I don't know what rotating them 180 would accomplish, unless they were polarised electrolytic types, which were incorrectly installed I the first place. Does the bypass switch work? So that the dry signal passes through ok?

Bypass signal is fine, they are polarised electrolytic type and come the ‘wrong way round’ from factory so octave effect doesn’t work correctly. Widely done mod which is acknowledged to be worthwhile

Ive ‘neatened’ the solder, bypassing pedal still works fine for dry signal but nothing when I stomp the on switch. Anything blatantly wrong?

Here it is with excess solder removed and contact cleaned

It looks like you've bridged one (or both) of the pads to the surrounding large ground area when they're meant to be isolated.

Clean off all the solder, carefully clean round the pad and make sure there is nothing bridging the gap, and then add a *small* amount of new solder.

The only ones that are meant to be connected to the ground area have the little 'spokes' across the gap.
