Any recommendations for a small fuzzy type pedal - or maybe something else?

Hi everyone,

I have been putting together my first small pedalboard using a pedal train nano+. The largest pedal on the board is my decade old Big Muff with tone wicker. I like this pedal for moments where I really just want to let go a bit - if that makes sense, especially with the tone bypassed and the wicker turned on. Maybe also with a cheeky bit of wah  :)

However I'm looking for something smaller so that I can fit everything else on the board.

The little big muff seems like an obvious option, but I'm not particularly in the know when it comes to pedals, and I wonder whether there is anything else out there I should try.

Yesterday I tried a few options that the sales guy recommended in my local shop (Fuzz face/one with Hendrix printed on it/ibanez mini fuzz thing/Gypsy Fuzz) and found most of them very dark to my ears unless the fuzz control was fully engaged. I did quite like the gypsy fuzz though. With that in mind I wonder whether there are other options other than fuzz that might also provide that fun factor for lead playing?

Any recommendations? I'm pretty flexible with budget, and would like something that is decent quality, but the pedal I get must be as small as possible.

Thanks a bunch for any input!

For reference, so far I'm using:
One of those tiny polytune tuner pedals
A tubescreamer mini
Big Muff Pi with tone wicker (the biggest pedal)
Ibanez mini analogue delay
Holy Grail nano

I'm looking to pick up a mxr 95 and ditto looper as well.

I thought this or EWS Little Fuzzy Drive. The Normal- Fat switch combined with the tone knob should sort you out.

Thanks for the input everyone, all of these look like good options.

I can't seem to find any demos of the CPS Muff War though?

Size wise the largest that I think would still allow for everything else to fit would be an ehx nano size pedal.

I guess the mythos golden fleece should be on your list? Mooer black secret would be a left field option - It's their rat clone.

Tone City Fuxx Fuzz might be worth considering - it's a tiny clone of the Foxx Tone Machine. Really nice sound with an octave switch to get the gnarly stuff going

Heard someone playing an EWS Fuzzy Drive the other week and thought it sounded great for a nasty bluesy lead tone.

@terada As per the recommendations above, I've got an EWS Fuzzy Drive going spare if you fancy it?

So I've spent a while now looking through loads of these and am still a little uncertain to say the least!

My board is currently as below, I'm using the larger polytune because it can be battery powered, but have a smaller one that I can use to free up some space.

What has become clear though is that it must be micro sized, as even a smallish normal pedal would not fit!

So far the EPS War Muff and EWS Fuzzy drive seem like likely candidates, and the mythos golden fleece looks cool too, but I haven't tried any of them!

One thing I was considering is maybe getting another OD type pedal and stacking it with the tube screamer - would that get me into thick lead territory?

Just looking at that picture - possibly the obvious one is the Ibanez mini fuzz? Never tried one, vague memory of YouTube videos in which it ain't subtle.

The Little Fuzzy Drive is surprisingly versatile, you could use it basically clean if you are stacking pedals or wind it up for a full on fuzz. I struggle with fuzz pedals and they seem to have  a sweet spot which is where they only sound good but not so the EWS.

  • You might also find that EBS patch leads help you make the best use of limited space. I bought the 10cm gold ones from Andertons and they helped me comfortably fit in an MXR-sized pedal where previously only a nano-sized one would just about squeeze in

Thanks for letting me know. These look tiny! I'll pick up a few and hopefully that will give me a little more room!

I expected them to feel quite flimsy and cheap, but actually they’re reassuringly solid, and the flat cable is nice textured anti-tangle stuff.

Quick thought - maybe a Wampler Tumnus might be a good idea?

Anyone have any thoughts on that? Would this sound good stacked with the tube screamer?
