Juansolo ‘The Enchanter’, use mine with a Princeton.  Works great adding a bit of hair to the sound without changing it much. Versatile e.q.    Timmy based but the controls are the right way round and is a bit smoother.

I also use a compressor (marshall) to provide boost/sustain to clean playing.

Xotic RC Boost, Way Huge Pork Loin, Liquid Sunshine or the Catalinbread Formula 5S.

I've had them all at some point and I've stuck with the Pork Loin. Surprisingly, the OCD on very low gain (8/9 o'clock on gain) is good.
Have you tried it on 18V?  Even better.

I've been through a fair few low gainers, and the Timmy does it for me through my Princeton!

Mad Professor (well the cheap Joyo clone) did the job for me when I used pedals for this kind of sound

    Nice pedal

I may do this as the OCD is on my board but I’m not using it as I’m favouring fuzz’s these days.

Running an ocd at low gain settings on 18v is pretty special imo.  I keep meaning to put two of them in one box so I can switch between them as I use an ocd for my main distortion sounds too.

Completely agree , the ocd at 18v low gain is great and knocked a few expensive pedals off the board . i find v1.7 is better sounding than the new v2.0 they brought out for lower gain stuff

  • The Timmy is my favourite. I've also tried a Rockett Archer, Emerson Em Drive, Barber Ltd, Tubescreamer, Zen Drive

SD-1 or the Waza SD-1.  Both sound amazing - the Waza is my favourite OD ever.

I've made (good quality) clones of the Zendrive, Honey Bee, and the Durham Sexdrive.

The Zendrive is pretty versatile, but I don't find it very inspiring. The Honey Bee, on the other hand, is pretty great, and has amazing touch sensitivity. You can go from jazzy cleans to crunch and smooth lead just via picking.

The pick of the bunch, though, is maybe the Sexdrive. I don't like it with the gain wound up much past half way (although that's a nice crunchy sound), but with the gain down a bit, you get a fantastic clean boost, with a little bit of breakup, and a really amazing EQ/compression thing happening, that brings out loads of sparkle and harmonic complexity, without overtly colouring the overall tone. It's just a "make everything sound more expensive" button.

For a Klone, check out the Fredric Effects Golden Eagle.

if its a standalone drive you're after have a look at a magnetic effects Sandare, which can work as a boost or overdive. Theres loads to choose from!

If you want to get a great sound without breaking the bank, you honestly cant go wrong with the Raygun Fx Soda Drive. Three different gain types and sounds ace!

I use a Tone City pedal called Sweet Cream. Its a £40 mini clone of the one of those Honey pedals. Its got a really nice bluesy low drive that I keep coming back to and it really reacts to picking/volume dynamics. Probably my most used pedal despite having others that are more expensive.

I used to have (and sold) a Sweet Cream. They are great. Amazing value for money.

I only sold it because I built the Honey Bee (and didn't need two near-identical pedals).

Definitely.  I've had a Klon KTR and a Lazy J Cruiser that I've sold on.  I've got a Thorpy Peacekeeper that I'm thinking of selling as well.  The OCD has been pretty much ever present for many years.

Of note. I tried stacking 2 OCDs (one on low gain and one on medium) and it didn't work. A TS type pedal or EP Boost works better with the OCD.
