Wampler Velvet Fuzz or ThorpyFX Fallout Cloud

What's Hot
I think I’ve narrowed down my choice of fuzz pedals to one of these.
Any experience or preferences on these?

No experience of either so my opinion isn’t exactly valid but from the demos I’ve heard, I would go with the Thorpy. The Velvet is quite a specific sound and you seem to be able to get a lot more from the Fallout. Looks like it would be much more friendly with lots of different amps as well.

I play guitar and take photos of stuff. I also like beans on toast.

I've owned a Muffroom cloud and a velvet Fuzz, sold both but ended up buying another Velvet Fuzz as it plays really well with a vibe next to it. Other muffs to look out for are the Vick Audio '73 rams head and the Skreddy Rust Rod, I have both and can highly recommend them.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

I’ve had the Muffroom, Velvet and the Vick Audio 73... I didn’t like the Velvet as much as the Vick 73 and the Muffroom.. This isn’t at volume though, home only...The Muffroom into a treble booster was fabulous  :)

  • I’d definitely be using it with a vibe so good to know if they go together well.

  • Zepp76 has good experience of how the Velvet sounds with a vibe...good from what I remember of our convos. I loved the Velvet too, had more of what I personally look for. But the Muffroom was superb too.

Never tried the Wampler but have played the Fallout Cloud a fair amount and it sounds ace. Fuzz doesn't get much better!

    I've not tried the Thorpy.
The Velvet is smaller I think, if that's a consideration.
It sounds brilliant with a vibe which is why I got it as it happens.,
I've since ditched the vibe but the velvet remains:  two things I like about it:  one is that that "fuzz" is pushing it a bit -- basically I don't think it's that fuzzy however it is capable of this kind of really ott overdrive/distortion sound which sounds brilliant (if you like that Neil Young, my amp's about to die, sound).
Second thing is that the volume on that thing is incredible.
There's a third thing too:  it's got a toggle switch and I love the bassier voiced setting but I have to refrain from using it in gigs cos everyone and their dog complains (boo!) so I keep it on the tight setting.  Still a monster.
Absolutely one of my favourite pedals.

The Thorpy is such a good pedal. It’s the EQ that works in its favour. You can use it happily with which ever Guitar type you like

Thorpy all the way. I’ve been playing mine more and more. Such a versatile pedal.

I've had both. I still have the Velvet Fuzz. I sold on the Muffroom cloud. It was OK, but big, heavy, and the Velvet seemed to just integrate better.

I was under the impression they weren't quite the same thing so might depend on your aim. Isn't the Thorpy a more traditional fuzz to be used as such?

The Velvet I thought is more aiming to sound like the full signal chain i.e. to give you the ball park tone of hitting a cranked stack with a fuzz. Sort of amp in a box for the whole signal chain.

I've got the velvet and it's great into a clean amp whereas I probably wouldn't use a traditional fuzz that way. Ymmv though.

  • That sounds awesome! Maybe the velvet is for me then cos I’m going straight into a fender DeVille ML. Although I was thinking I could use a Plexi style pedal after it to give it that into an overdriven amp sound.

I basically loathe fuzz but have occasionally bought them out of curiosity, only to sell them instantly. However, having failed to find a used Scarab Deluxe I now have a Fallout which arrived from the excellent Joe's Pedals yesterday and is curiously addictive.

Very powerful tone controls, so I can shape it however I want. Decent range of gain too, and pretty noise-free for a pedal chucking out such filth.

I may keep this one at least a week

The Velvet does one thing which I don't think any other pedals do which is sound like a fuzz into a dirty Marshall.

If you are using a very clean amp so you want to go from say a funk clean to a Isley Brothers style fuzz in one click it will do that better than anything else wheras almost any other fuzz would sound like a bee in a tin.

If you want a really well made and versatile Muff then the Thorpy is the way to go.

  • Cheers @monquixote - I have a a catalinbread DLS in front of a Fender deluxe reverb so I can switch between clean and Marshally crunch/gain.  So I suppose the fallout cloud into the DLS ought to cover all bases?  Or equally just the velvet fuzz.  Too many choices!
