I have a Laney amp that was by far the best [to my ears] when I looked about three years ago. It's not made anymore but the replacement seems half decent - starts at £80. Check out the video:

Surprisingly enough the nicest cheap one I can remember playing was a little Behringer. (30W I think.) It was really quite full and deep sounding for such a little thing, and looked quite well-made. Peavey used to make a couple of good ones as well, the Minx and Microbass... not sure if they still do.

My Laney amp has a direct out which is handy for recording and a small gig in you have a PA. I think the new ones have the same facility. And it's built like a Russian T34 - rock solid. I'd definitely try one.

Another vote for the small Laney.  Cheap and cheerful but gets the job done and is well put together imo.

    cube 30 - perfect

of course they make something else now, but a s/h one would be cheap :)

I was going to say Laney as well. Good little amps for not much money.
