Apparently, from here it’s a downward spiral.

Youll soon be preaching that only vintage fenders and Gibson’s are the only true guitars out there, that ageing a guitar is only acceptable with time and play, Marks and Sparks becomes your number one choice for clothing, the beer gives way to wine and the best comes at the end..... golf. Bloody golf.

On or around my birthday, some woman at work asked me how it felt to be 40.
I truthfully answered that it made me wonder how long I'd got left. She seemed put-out, clearly I was supposed to come up with a cheery, glib response.

From the standpoint of someone with a 20 year head start on you, all I can do is warn you that the stories about creaky joints, interrupted sleep (going for a wee), deteriorating eyesight and hearing etc ... they're all true. What is NOT mandatory: dentures, beige cardigans, golf, Werther's Originals. Get OC/DC about cleaning your teeth and keep your self-respect concerning dress-sense. You just have to put more effort into maintaining a body which is doing its damnedest to self-destruct while you're still trying to live in it. All the best ...

Happy birthday .

I played my last "trying to be a rock star" gig - ie the last gig with my originals band - actually on my 40th birthday, as a way of going out in style... it seems like a long time ago now!

Since then I've done a bit of sideman stuff and started playing bass in a retro covers band, so it isn't all over yet, but it's definitely not the same.

Although it is worth remembering that two of the guys in Garbage were in their 40s when the band became successful .

I've only been 40 for a few months. But I'm quite enjoying it. I give less of a s**t about the pointless stuff.
