Fifties Fender spec could mean at least three different things.
    • the original single coil, four polepiece design.
    • the 1957 dual coil, eight polepiece design.
    • the 1958/9 dual coil pickup with longer rod magnets under the A string.
Which version did you have in mind?

57,58,59 would be ideal...cheaper the better and looking for a cleaner tone instead of a pickup that growls...was looking at the Wilkinson Alnico but can’t find a sound comparison against anything

What pickup are you using at the moment and what is it about it that you dislike? Also, what strings and amplification are you using?

I dont play bass but have an Ibanez SR500 with active bartolini pickups for recording and just picked up a MM Fender Precision with pickups that dont work...I want both an active and passive bass for recording and use Markley Blue Steel strings...I record though a Helix for guitars and bass...The Ibanez sounds great but modern so looking to make the Fender more classic..

I suspect that the Bartolini MK1 pickups are passive and only the onboard EQ is active.

The stock pickup in the Fender MIM Standard and some of the vintage looking Precision Bass model is of the steel slug polepieces and underslung ceramic bar magnet persuasion. You are wise to want to replace it. You may wish to upgrade the control electronics at the same time.

The EMG-GZR pickup would be an easy installation. Just unfasten the original wiring harness in its entirety. The EMG-GZR is a fully solderless passive system.

Off a VM P-bass but I ended up keeping them.

@BornFromAJackal are they still for sale? I have a Westfield P kicking about that I'm thinking of sticking a  neck into, to use as backup for my VM Jazz.
