ECC83 replacement

I need to change the V1 preamp valve in my PRRI, what's a good replacement for a Fender amp?
I guess any will do, but what sounds good for reasonable money.  JJ?

The outgoing valve is a Fender Groove Tubes / Sovtek 12AX7WC

I would consider a reasonably priced NOS, but I'm not sure those really exist anymore.

A lot of the modern valves are basically rebrands of the same thing

you basically have a choice of Chinese or Russian

I'd suggest trying JJs and Sovtek LPS and see what you like

Bit OOTouch these days but the TAD 7025 HG I always found quiet and reliable, not a bad price either.

N.B. When you change the valve run the amp for several hours and drive ***t off it if you can (actually make a noise and shake it)

I found a good 25% of the front end valves I fitted went noisy, usually a low level crackle/burble after such a test.

I find anything other than JJ to be ok in the preamp. Im currently using Tungsol. To my ears the JJ is a little to dark.

+1 for Dave on this one, Whilst I fit JJs (Slovakia by the way not Russian), for longevity the TAD 7025s do get the vote from guitarists that I work with. I am not a fan NOS valves, simply because the vast majority end up being microphonic - IMHO.

EHX suit Fender preamps pretty well imho.  Seem quiet with a bit of sparkle which JJs don't seem to have.
