Achieving a satin type finish on a maple neck?

Wassup fellers. Picked up the lovely Charvel Strathead that was on the classifieds recently and while I'm very happy with it there's one mod I'd like to do... It's had the finish sanded off the back of the neck and, though fast, it's a bit raw for my liking. What id like is a subtle satin type finish, not gloss. What would be the best - some very light rubbing with super fine wet and dry, followed by some neutral briwax, or maybe an oil (if so, which?)...? Or a spray lacquer followed by rubbings? Least keen on the latter because of the hassle of masking up the fretboard but will do whatever is best. Ideas?
