  • Bloody hell, Jonathan, why won't you guys let me live. The choices of British guitars are far greater than 25 years ago.

I was chatting to Doug at The Guitar Show: The man is a mine of information, I can not remember everything he was saying, but I kinda remember what he was saying about tone relating to string gauge/tension and pick hardness.  I'm not going to regurgitate it here, I may have it completely wrong.

I've always found thick strings, and lightish picks give me a great base for tone, and then adjust pick material for fine tuning. That way the strings dont go sharp as you pick. But it's all relative as the string will vibrate more over a larger scale length so you have to balance the three.

Okay - well finally got the project I had been looking forward to getting finished done:
I had wanted to bild an SG type the way we do, but see about using some old leftover hardware and use an oil finish to keep the price down, so it could be offered for sale at a lower price than it usually would (normally a painted version of this would be about £2300+)
We are offering this one at £1799

3 piece mahogany neck with rosewood board
mohogany body (thicker than normal SG for balance, strength at neck join)
Bound Rosewood board with real Mother of Pearl inlays (no plastic)
    24 Dunlop 6100 frets
Grover tuners, Schaller bridge and tailpiece (these are the only parts that I recycled)
    Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell pickups
CTS pots , Switchcraft jack, screned cavities

Those who know me will know that UFO are one of my all time favourite bands and I have something of an Obsession (sic) over them.
In recent times I have been lucky to do some work for their rhythm guitarist and keyboard maestro Paul Raymond.

Thought I'd share a picture of the Vintage brand Les Paul style guitar that Paul will be using on this next UFO tour.
We recently upgraded both pickups on this baby .
The bridge pickup is a Bare Knuckle Mule and the single coil type pickup in the neck is an ASL Pickups Big Block Broadcaster pickup.
Paul had the ASL in the bridge for the Paul Raymond Project dates where he was working with a slightly mellower vibe, but we switched it to the neck (where it sounds great ) and gave him the punchier sound of a calssic PAF in the form of a Bare Knuckle Mule.
The eagle eyed amongst you may spot that Paul has his guitars strung back to front - a legacy of learning to play on right handed guitars turned upside down. It's also one of the resons that Pauls playing sounds a little different as he strikes the treble strings in a chord first if playing with downstrokes.

With the Darkness hitting the road again very soon , it was time for a quick pit stop for Justin's guitars - we had done brother Dan's guitars already.
So the main Alpine Slut (justin's main white LP Custom) and her sisters came to visit.

We did some fretdressing and added Earvana Nuts to the guitars to improve the clarity and in-tune-ness of the chords. We also swapped the two bridges and tailpieces on the white guitars for TonePros locking ones, as the original bridges were collapsing a bit in the middle from years of string tension.

These are 3 great sounding guitars and otherwise completely stock.

This one is Justin's main guitar that he calls the Alpine Slut

A very classic looking offering we made for Mike .We wanted to capture a lightly faded 59 LP vibe, but with all the creature comforts and refinements that we like to add:

Three piece quartersawn neck, volute , Dunlop 6100 frets, Earvana Compensated tuning nut, Sperzel tuners, TonePros tunamatic bridge and tailpiece studs, and a lightweight aluminium tailpiece.

    Turned out very nicely too!

The pickups are a pair of Bare Knuckle Pickups Mules wired via a harness with CTS/BKP 550k pots and a pair of Jensen paper in Oil caps - although the neck tone is a CTS500k push pull that coil splits the neck pickup for singel coil sounds.

Currently working on one of Michael Schenker's old guitars that his son Tyson brought in (it belongs to him now).
About 10 years old and a pretty standard black Gibson V but nice connection there.

Redo-ing the electrics and a bit of fretwork.
Taking a bit of extra pride in this one I think :)

The Schenker guitar has gotten a bit more serious .
A previous break where the neck joins the body hadn't been repaired properly (or at all).
The neck seemed to have a bit too much movement causing possible instability.
So I've had to complete the break and remove the neck from the body so I can repair some of the splintered bits and refit the neck properly.

At this rate it's turning into another "Judas Priest " job....I better start taking some photos.
