Fix/Replace pots, or the whole loom?

What's Hot
One of the only things I've not found spot-on with my new LP is the feel of the pots. They're all CTS stuff, but clearly have been used and abused to the point there's very little inertia while adjusting them: they just feel a bit cheap even though they are quality.

Is there a way to fettle them back into shape? If not,it looks like there's alot going on in there, so I'm not sure whether to replace the whole loom or just the pots, one by one:

Any thoughts would be gladly appreciated.

Are all four pots logarithmic/audio resistance taper?

Linear taper will give the impression of little or nothing happening through much of the rotational arc of the pot shaft.

The CTS brand name used to be a byword for professional quality. Their Taiwanese factory production has been disappointing. Strangely, the items made for third parties still seem to be of the expected standard. (Maybe, it is just old stock?) I like the CTS pots marketed as DiMarzio Pro Parts.

    Be seeing you.

The volumes are CTS 500k-B and the tones are CTS 500k-A - they sound great and I'm not disputing the configuration - just that physically they feel like they spin too easily (at least in comparison to the Gibson/Edwards LPs I have had).

If CTS are best avoided for new stock, what's the best choice?

I would replace the whole lot, with 'premium' CTS pots from a specialist reseller who buys the good ones - they're still the best in my opinion. The standard production ones are now unfortunately quite poor.

  • Do you have any suggestions for shops? I see that Oil City stock looms and they've been great for pickups, and I'm checking with Feline on the cost of them doing it for me.

the pots in your photo are the dish back/vintage style back pots which are notorious for being very loose and too easy to turn. Given that pots loosen up over time anyway, I personally like a pot with a little bit of stiffness. Nothing too stiff mind. As @ICBM says, go for some of the premium pots. Not much more expensive and worth the extra.

Theres a few on the market in the UK. I’d go for the TVT (true vintage taper) pots by CrazyParts. The
quality is superb and you get a slightly more linear (but still audio) and therefore more useable taper from 0-10
