What's your favourite compost for planting delphiniums?

I like the John Innes multi purpose compost for most tasks. Can't say I was impressed with Jack's Magic though which I found to be dry and almost powdery, didn't absorb water well and was very quick to allow evaporation.

I generally use whatever multi purpose is on sale (we get through a fair bit of compost here) and mix it 50/50 with sieved garden compost for seedlings, potting on and so on. Agree with the Jack Magic comment, used some at a clients and was not impressed.

Like @VimFuego says, garden or home made compost is often better in terms of the feed content with out adding expensive fertiliser, but needs to be sifted to remove the worst excesses of twiggs etc. Many shop bought composts are seemingly variable in quality and I sometimes buy stuff just to top up hanging baskets and the like.
Leaf mould is a great additive for compost and especially as the main ingredient of seed compost. I use broken down pine needles as addetive for ericatious composts.

Slight tangent: Why do they measure it in litres?

Westland Gro-sure has been working for me. Plants seem to like it.

Now we're down to business. I don't get through as much as before but I liked Wyvale before we started with our own bins. It still amazes me how good the compost can be from grass cuttings and leaves.

They sell it by volume rather than weight because the moisture level varies considerably I'd imagine

Generally Westland. B&Q stuff is bollocks. I go to the council yard occasionally and get trailer loads for free. But you need to sieve it.
