I lusted after a Baja for a long time, wanting to get hold of the famous neck. Bought one recently and just didn't gel with the neck - it was actually too beefy for me. It is a decent handful with a fair bit of shoulder, which I wasn't expecting on a soft-v. I sold it on and am resigned to having to get Allparts V necks refretted for my future soft-v fix.
Find one in a shop to try out before committing (although as long as you don't overpay you shouldn't lose money on a used Baja)
If you're looking for something similar appearance-wise see if you can find one of the butterscotch Standards before they all sell out. A few weeks ago they were going for £460 ish new.
Or there's a nice Classic 50s for sale in the classifieds for a decent price if you can get on with vintage radius/frets.
That's interesting. Mine has very little shoulder and a nice V shape to it. I wouldn't like it if it had a fair bit of shoulder. I guess it goes to show that every guitar is different and "try before you buy" is always best!

Indeed - I don't know how much they have varied over the years (mine was 2010/11) but I was surprised at how full it was in the hand. I was expecting something similar to an Allparts V but flatter radius and bigger frets.

I really like the Baja necks but i'm not a fan of the butterscotch body, it's like playing a Werthers Original. It comes in sunburst and black though.
Alternatively, get that poly off altogether:

I also have an allparts V (albeit strat) and it is not as deep as the Baja - definitely prefer the Baja radius and frets..

I have 3 Baja 50's necks, and just sold a 4th, and they're all noticably different.

With advancing, years, not only do I find myself curiously drawn to Volvos, but I’m slowly succumbing to the idea of owning aTelecaster.

At the moment, my head says that I should be looking at a Squier Classic Vibe as an entry point, but my heart is leaning to saving the extra dosh for a Baja Classic player.

Is the extras cash for the Baja justified?

Obviously I’ll be intending to compare a few, but any opinions are gratefully received.

I'm 32 and own a Volvo and a Tele, in fact the Volvo is my favourite car I've owned

Thats because you're too young to have ever owned a proper SAAB.

    I'm 48, until a year ago I was a strat guy.

I'd owned Teles, but either never played them much and sold them - or just sold them.

Then I got a good one.

Then I got another good one.

Play them more than anything else - just wonderful things!

I've owned a Tele since I was 16, so 34 years now. I've had one or two....maybe more like 80 or 90. Everyone should have one or atleast try one. I'd go for the Baja, seems like a good guitar to upgrade too in the future.

Me too but have you seen what people are asking for a P1800 these days?
The estate version was basically a Tele on wheels:

Always had Volvos including a white 1800s from 1967, recently sold :-(  ...........now have relatively boring but quite fabulous S80 D5,  After 30 years of guitars, only recently got first Fender, a paisley MIJ Tele,  super sexy , very clangy.

  • I had a Baja. Sold it. Bought a CV 50s BSB Tele and still have it. Much preferred my CV. My nephew has a Baja though which is nicer than the one I had so maybe my one wasn't a great one. You do seem to see a fair number for sale though.

@kt66 I recently put a new loom and a set of Oil City pickups in what was my old Paisley Tele (now owned by @CountryDave). Nothing wrong with the stock pup's, but the Oil City's are very, very nice -especially the Whapping Wharf bridge which is just awesome. In fact I have a Whapping Wharf waiting to go in my own Tele - a mongrel with a Squier CV 60's body, Mexican Fender maple neck and Strat neck pickup - aesthetically it's an homage to the Fender Japan Jerry Donahue Tele's from back in the day. I'd ultimately like to get a 50's Baja neck for it as that profile feels just perfect to me, but it's great as it is.
