Classic Lacquer 60s, but they have a 7.25” radius board (never bothered me, I have 4 Fenders with the vintage radius and I’ve been able to set up all of them well). Older ones will have a rosewood board, newer ones Pau Ferro.

You could probably make it exist with a partscaster for under £500 - that way you get what body, neck and pickups you want ;)

  • Don't dismiss  a 7.25" if you haven't tried one.  You might find some of the models mentioned here will suit you. Good luck.

The new American Original is nitro finish and 9.5" radius.  The 60's version has rosewood board.  Seems to tick all your boxes depending on how you define not too expensive and whether it is within your budget.

Why don't you want 7.25" radius?  Is that from actual personal experience, or just internet perceived wisdom?  I really like 7.25".

You have more options to choose from if you look at 7.25" radius.  You have all the AVRIs over the years, which would be good value second hand.

If you like totally unrealistic relicing there is the roadworn series.

There is the also nitro finished lacquer Strat:

The latest version of that has a Pau Ferro board because of CITES, but I doubt you would be able to tell the difference in blindfold test.

It has a horrible 70's headstock (unless it's one of the really early ones).

Highway Ones ended up with jumbo frets too.

The Highway Strats I have worked on have had medium frets and small headstocks, they are a bit of a bargain tbh
