I really admire McCartney for the ease with which he deals with people. He knows more than anyone that Beatledom is a galactic level of fame that changes the whole atmospheric pressure in a room. I once plucked up the courage to speak to George and though he was as nice as pie (from behind wraparound mirror shades), from what I've seen and heard of Macca, he has it nailed... a few friendly words, split-second timing, handshakes all round, a little quip here or there, keeping moving. It decompresses the whole experience and never lets anyone down. It's actually a great talent.

Macca has the understanding of what he is and can do for people, he is generous with his time as much as is reasonable to expect for a superstar and human being. He can get away to peace and quiet and pop up again in public when he wants to (within reason). A great talent of gigantic proportions. His wealth is of no consequence, he lives a relatively simple life compared to most stars near his stature and nearly all the stars that have no real stature. He lives primarily to make music and that occupies his efforts.

The other bloke that kept popping up in the video is an inconsequential nobody.

I know it is so irrational, because I am a big fan of our comedy, but I cannot watch James Corden.

Paul is excellent in that clip but every time Corden tries to join in it's like he doesn't really understand music that well, not in a snobby way, just that music doesn't seem to be that big a deal for him. Like most commercial radio DJs, he likes the stuff everyone likes but isn't absolutely passionate about music.

I'd rather see a really funny or down to earth comedian/musician meet these musicians.

Ronnie Biggs and the like perhaps, but writing lucrative happy pop songs that are loved my millions seems to be quite a peaceful career by comparison.

That's like saying "I love a good wine, but I really can't stand those Fruit Shoot drinks". Corden is the equivalent of a social club host but apart from his yelling about the new album at the end which was rather annoying, I thought he was quite easy to ignore on this one (thankfully)

re him dedicating his time & money to supporting worthwhile causes, i think this piece (about how he stepped in to save one of our local hospitals a few years ago) outlines his philosophy well.

his basic principle being that if a charity he considers worthwhile needs £1m then he will happily contribute 50% or 75% etc, but always leave an achievable sum unfufilled to encourage the charity & local community to pull together to support a service they consider important to them.

he then provides that charity with the fundraising people & resources & know how they need to help them generate the remainder as quickly & effectively as possible. empowering & facilitating their community-centred mission, rather than just buying the problem off wholesale.

but he is ideologically against the idea of spoon-feeding the entire sum total to a given cause on day one, because he feels that will make people feel they (on an individual responsibility level) don't have to get up off their arses & put their energy & money into those things they say they care about.

i think that's generous, fair & wise. it both gets the money in & catalyses & supports real community spirit.

anyway, he donated £1m to save one of our local hospitals in 1995, which in today's prices would be a lot more. not in the list of charities above but another among his many causes.
