What seems not even really that long ago I paid a decent chunk for a digital hardware synth. Software synths were around at the time but very much basic and novel and not a viable alternative to hardware. Then just shortly after the soft synth market exploded and made hardware redundant for all except live work so I sold it for a fraction of what I bought it for. Today the software has vastly overtaken any hardware there ever was and most people are comfortable using it live so if I was to sell that today I'd expect peanuts if someone was buying it for novelty value or something.

This is very familiar to all of us who own professonal grade DSLR cameras! But then there is also an argument for the 'technology sweet spot' where you can buy great quality gear for cheap as its only just become 'not the latest thing'.
