Legendary Congolese guitarist, singer, composer, Franco Luambo Makiadi, used an unusual Gibson towards the end of his career. Looked a bit like a Strat. I can't find out anything about it via Google. Can anyone help out?

Cheers

You need an idea of what you are going to do, but it should be a vague idea.

    Victory series.

If his hand were not blocking the view of the pickguard, it would be possible to say exactly which model.
    Be seeing you.

Yallah! Some more imaginative Googling/Duck-Duck-Going revealed it to be a Gibson Victory, an attempt by Gibson to cash in on the super-strat craze. Badly timed and marketed it didn't do well, but was apparently a fantastic guitar. Try listening to Franco's band, OK Jazz, to get a flavour. Wonderful.

As Funkfingers unerringly discerns, a Victory... other pics reveal an MVX with the HSH layout.

I'm old enough to have been around when those guitars and matching basses were launched. I have no recollection of ever having been in the same room as one.

Me too. Played a couple of the guitars, which left me unmoved. Also once picked up a bass, or tried to, as it refused point-blank to leave the floor.

Is it just me or does Franco look distinctly uninspired by his Victory?

It was like Excalibur.  Only a bassist man enough to play with Ted Nugent could wield it.
