A police helicopter has spotted arsonists setting light to moorland in Lancashire near a five-mile-long wildfire that continues to burn.
Firefighters have been battling the blaze on Winter Hill near Bolton for a week and the inferno was declared a major incident on Sunday.
Twenty two fire engines were at the scene this morning. They said that the wildfire was rapidly developing and had become fiercer after merging with another blaze on Horrocks Moor.
The fire is less than 40 miles from a fire on Saddleworth Moor and a helicopter hired by a water company to dump water on the moors was due to return this morning.
The fire service warned that other fires were being started deliberately and that when a police helicopter was sent up to survey the area yesterday people were spotted lighting fires in grassland called Healey Nab.
Tony Crook, of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, told Sky News that it was “absolutely heartbreaking and unbelievable”. He said that the perpetrators were putting themselves, their communities and emergency workers at risk. “As they’ve been trying to extinguish the fire, people have been seen lighting other grass fires in the vicinity,” he said. “Police are now attending that scene to try to apprehend those arsonists. It absolutely astounds me.”
Pedestrians and motorists have been urged to stay away from the area. Fire-break trenches are being dug to protect homes and firefighters from across the country have been brought in.
No rain is expected in the coming days. Helen Roberts, from the Met Office, said: “The trend is for dry and very warm weather, which is far from ideal. Thunderstorms in the southwest are unlikely to reach that far north. On Wednesday, there is the potential for showers in that vicinity but it could be a one-off, isolated and unlikely to hit the area. Thursday is similar and any showers would be isolated and fleeting.”
Ms Roberts added that winds were likely to pick up overnight.
A 22-year-old man from Bolton was arrested on June 29 on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life but he was released pending further inquiries.
As if the fire service hasn't got better things to do ...

Johnny went for a walk to see the fire and was overcome by smoke. Don't be like Johnny.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!
There was an article recently in the papers that featured some blokes who committed crimes but were put on community service, painting a house.
They then spent the time uploading pictures to social media, which is how the press found out.
Pictures of them sticking fingers up to the camera drinking beer with smug captions added.
You cant teach people who dont wanna learn.
Their parents were probably the same.
I’d castrate the fuckos and put an end to it.
But alas, we live in the Uk so if they even are caught its a show of leniency and then let em back out.
Then everyone acts surprised when it happens again.
Farcical.
I'd hate to see this geezer not come home to his 3 young boys and his lovely wife, as a result of the actions of these vacuous cunts. The job is dangerous enough without imbecility in the mix.
