My local CC specialises in Rockburn guitars, and ridiculously priced semi-reasonable guitars. Someone in there seems to think that just because some Ibanezes cost a grand, all Ibanezes cost a grand.

You can point out to the staff that any guitar will probably need a set-up and new strings and it's like talking to a brick wall.

I bought a Beta 57 from CC through ebay, when it arrived and I found out it was fake they immediately refunded money and too it back.

I bought another from some bloke on the bay, that was fake too (they all look right in a photo!) When i challenged him he said his son had gone to Uni and he was clearing out his stuff, keep the mic and I'll refund your money which he did. As it turns out not a bad mic in its own right so win all round.

Don't forget to ask them about the missing pickup. Maybe you can get a discount ;-)

Reverse Effect: With all the copies from China around now, I would be so sceptical buying any top brand guitar used other than from a retailer. So in a way, this should ultimately feed back into the cycle of life and retailers see an upturn in used business.

Cash Converters has basically been crap since the internet was invented.  Now everyone's an expert and the price of everything in there has doubled.

I mined a rich seam of effects pedals from one branch in the late 90's - lord knows where they were coming from.  I did have a sneaking suspicion they were a bit... lacking in provenance but naff-all I could do to repatriate them with any likely ex-owner.

Anyway one of them was a Boss Metal Zone which I bought on a whim to see if they were as bad as everyone says.  I suppose that was my comeuppance.

  • I'd love to, but my flat is now filling up. If I'd not gone for the strat I'd be on it though. No space left really. Sad times as that's a piece I was really curious about.

Got a white Japanese Tokai SG custom from the Eccles branch in hard case for £150 it was filthy and gunky but that was lucky, then 2 weeks later i won a full setup on facebook from Jacks instruments in Manchester so off it went to him. It came back fully setup cleaned and polished. then i sold it.....

Bought a faulty BOSS RE-20 for £30 in Staines, hoping that they'd tested it with a regular polarity adaptor. Took it home and turns out they did :), wonderful delay.

I did similar with an HM2, they it was broken but must've been using the wrong adapter. MIJ too. Bought for 20 sold for around 100.

The best stuff I've seen in Cash Converters is the Islington branch. Always decent cameras, guitars and watches in there. Also there's a pawnbrokers in Kilburn near the Good Ship, that's had an ESP George Lynch Snakes & Skulls in its window for about two years.

  • In about late 90s to 2000 I got a Sinclair calculator for £1.50 in CC in Exeter . I was delighted and showed it to my friends  who reminded me not to leave batteries in it. I promptly did and they leaked badly , corroding the terminals which broke off. I put it on eBay starting about £1.50 clearly showing the damage and got more than £40 quid for it. I have also had a maglite for about £1.50 and a Victorianox army knife for about £2.00 it’s one with loads of blades and must have cost about £60 or £70 . I don’t seem to get such gems any more though. Must have a look again soon

  • Purchase a mint PRS SE last year for a decent price from a CC. Came with upgraded locking Gotoh tuners, and covered pickups. Popped the pickups out once it was home, and to my pleasant surprise found that they were a set of Bareknuckle's.

So some occasions, it may work to one's advantage (just).

I don't buy anything from CC on the basis that I don't want to support crime...that's why I don't buy vintage guitars either. :)

Just an update for anyone trying to use the online site which at the moment is failing.  In the sort by tab choose oldest to newest when it reaches the oldest page resort newest to oldest for the latest instruments otherwise you see the first page showing from ages ago..They are supposed to be fixing the site but it's still not functioning correctly.

Very similar story to an amp I bought from Cash Generator in Birmingham, tried to sell it on when it wasn't for me (and it had been a bargain purchase from Cash Generator!) and the actual original owner from whom it had been stolen in Milton Keynes got in touch. That was a very awkward conversation I can tell you, but as it was all above board from me obviously it was fine.

However that was in October. After I'd taken it back to the shop and informed the police of it's whereabouts, the shop managed to get it back on sale less than 3 weeks after i'd taken it back, and it had sold the same day when I spotted it. I had to get back in touch with the police as thankfully the purchaser had left it in the shop while he arranged to transport it home.

As far as I know, the owner still does not have his amp back. I can only hope it's still in the CG store room and not been sold for a third time. The owner and I are still in touch and he has said repeatedly it's the police being slow but it's also pretty shady on CG's part given they had the details of the person who'd sold it, I'd given them the crime number and a phone number for Thames Valley Police told them to hold it.
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me
