Hi i thought I'd start this and hopefully people can chime in on this idea

This is a possible commission as i said to someone i fancy doing a full carved top 59 dc to try and get a pretty good burst tone but with more comfort, it's all a bit trial and error at this stage, i better see if it works before any possible commission

I'm using Spanish cedar body and neck with a maple cap, it's a 59 style as i like where the neck pickup sits better than the later ones
I also need to use a different neck joint, I'm aiming for a bit like a normal LP long tenon but possibly more like a 335 heel as it's part of the neck and I'll extend the bottom part of the heel so it's flush with the body, hopefully this and shoulders plus as deep a tenon as i can get will really help strengthen it, I'm also thinking about 2 f holes

With the controls I'm thinking 2 vol 1 master tone then the 3 way switch so i don't overcrowd the body

This won't be a quick build as I'm working it around my normal work and I'm interested in opinions too

It would be nice if i can work out how to do a direct picture on my phone

Anyway here's a maple cap i had previously done and it's maybe 1mm less than a full burst top so i used that

    It's a great idea.

The Gibson Tak Matsumoto sigs are all DC carved tops.

Are you planning on chambering the body?

Interesting build, thanks for sharing it – I really enjoy reading these threads.

If you're on mobile, you just long press on the image in the imgur app, select "copy", then come here, press the insert image button, paste and hit space :)

As for the guitar, I've often wondered why Gibson have never done this model properly. They've done a couple of "Standard DC" models, but never quite specced well enough.

I reckon a version with P90's, binding and dots and blacktop finish would be an amazing guitar. Maybe with a Bigsby.... Kinda Gretsch-meets-Gibson in all the right ways.

For symmetric carved top DC's a bit on the modern metal side of things and really traditional but I really like the Dunable Moonflower.

There is also a guy called Paul Reed Smith who makes a lot of carved top double cutaway stuff ;)

    obviously Hamer too.

i like the idea. I always liked the DC les Paul’s Gibson made in the 90’s, although I think they were flat top.

No worries!  I posted them up as I think they could be quite interesting for non traditional DC type guitars and certain features, including the positions of the vol/tone on the top guitar, and the one below has 4 controls/3 way switch on the lower bout but does look a bit on the busy side of things.

I remember you sent me a picture of that before, a guitar you used Sapele for right?  I like that one A LOT.  With some 12-52's tuned to A# and a RAT it'd be a doom riff machine!

    Yes 2 piece sepele body

There's obviously a few things I'd do differently, reduce neck angle by along way, i got told a measurement and thought it was without a fretboard but it was with it so its really high, reduce weight and move the neck join so it's joined at maybe 19th fret

sounds good and plays well, i even like the neck
