So i have this...
It was a black metallic thing what was pretty nasty, and was a total ballache to get off.
There's still more sanding and things to do.. but i've now started thinking about what to do with it.
I really like natural/stained wood with grain showing, but as it's basswood and this doesn't really show, i'm looking for any other ideas.
Was thinking something along the lines of a dirty dark brown type stain with sort of gunmetal hardware for an aged/industrial/wild western type look... maybe some sort of veneer just up to the contours and something there...
I have serious guitars so maybe something a bit silly for this one? Pink zebra fluffcaster? I'm not really sure.. Throw some ideas this way!
My mad wood skills are lacking, i do enjoy power tools but my wife won't let me have anything past a small drill. So nothing too complicated, but i'm not shy of a challenge
anndddd go!

As for "when am I ready?" You'll never be ready. It works in reverse, you become ready by doing it. - pmbomb

and uh.. it's taken me two years of very unsteady labour to sand it.. i imagine painting should be done sometime in 2020 and the guitar will be ready for the Fretboard 10th birthday.
Besides that, still haven't settled on a final design.. so i've got that to mull over for a few months before realising i've lost the guitar and just buy a new one..
This:
Turned into this:
Which turned into this:
Which turned into this:
Which after much sanding and adding oil turned into this:
Which is where i am now...,
Not too happy with a few bits of it.. could have done with a bit more sanding on the horn grooves... and the oil has really shown up the body pieces.
But overall, i think its a good start. Just letting the first coat soak in for the night then stick number 2 on tomorrow. Maybe.
Oh, apart from the neck pocket - that looks a bit slack to me
Looks alright here after a few coats..
but then,
Wetsanded with the oil after a few more coats and now it is really showing up damage on the sides... feels good but looks worse i think..
Not really sure where to go from here.. it needs something else.. Thinking about maybe completely sanding back the sides/contours (just top and bottom) and re-oiling in a lighter shade to make a contrast, and while doing that will sort out the side damage..
Do it. Use a hard sanding block starting with a good quality 60-80g paper. you will soon have those bevels back in shape and can work back up the grades with the same method.
Wet the wood with a damp cloth at least a day before oiling. this will raise any imperfections and once dry you can sand smooth again

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?
