This Martin 00018 dates from 1967 (S/N 217865) and has added Grover Rotomatic tuners (these look pretty old), a modern brass jack socket strap button, strap button on the heel and the back of the neck has most likely been refinished at some point. The guitar may have had a neck reset too in the past as there’s still a fair amount of saddle meaning the action could still come down further in future, if necessary. The body has no significant cracks as far as I can see, which is also unusual. The guitar is strung with Newtone balanced tension 12s and the top is straight and true below with bridge with minimal bellying.

The timber used to make this instrument is extremely lightweight so that the guitar feels very resonant yet structurally solid in your hands and it looks and sounds gorgeous and plays beautifully too, as you would expect from a guitar of this quality and age. The guitar has been well played over its 50-year life and the overall condition reflects this – some guitars are just meant to be played and played and played and this is definitely one of them. There is plenty of lacquer checking, marks and patina consistent with an instrument of this age and the finish has darkened beautifully in the way that only vintage instruments can. Bridge and fingerboard are Brazilian rosewood.

The tone is sweet, articulate and light – typical of mahogany and spruce Martins of this era – but it’s got plenty of volume and projection. Unusually it has kept its original case which still provides good protection and all the catches work.

This guitar is not a pristine museum piece but a solid player’s instrument that will only go up in value. The price reflects the changes made to the guitar over the years, which have all been done professionally and do not detract from the guitar’s integrity and heritage.

Collection would be preferable – the instrument is currently near Bath. Shipping is also possible as the case provides good protection but the seller cannot be held responsible for any damage that occurs in transit. More pics available on request.
